The majestic Aliens Don't Boogie was an instant banger when it was released back in 1999 and has been a regular in the bags for some of the largest DJ's in the techno scene for years. Now some of the big names in the Dub techno scene make their homage to this classic and do so with style.
Firstly we have the don of the Russian techno scene Andrey Pushkarev transforming it into a ultra-deep hypnotic voyage. The Icelandic techno youngling Waage brings his hallmark dub influences and creates an after- hours delight from the source material. On the flipside, it starts with a remix from the brothers Mark & Matt Thibideau. The Canadian sensations are on their A-game with this one; creating a delicately structured atmospheric yet groovy take on the original. The release is completed with a deep and trippy remix from the Icelandic dub techno legend Octal Industries.
Thule Records is considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of dub-influenced techno music, and has been a starting point for many of Iceland's most renowned electronic musicians.

In the nineteenth episode of the Sonogramma Podcast dedicated to ambient and experimental music from the @ssi-records label, the curator of the podcast, Ilia @symphocat presents a mix dedicated to the American avant-garde composer and poet Harold Budd, who passed away in 2019 on the 84th year of his life.

Harold Budd is an American composer of avant-garde and ambient music. Born in Los Angeles (California, USA). His career as a composer began in 1962. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in music. Harold is known for developing a unique and powerful style of ambient music for that time, collaborating with famous musicians. Brian Eno called Budd "a great abstract artist trapped in the body of a musician." The Guardian wrote: "Budd's basic sound consists of yearning piano motifs and impressionism filled with reverberation, often called minimalism. Harold is the heir of the composers Satie and Debussy, his music was refined and poetic...”

The foundation of this set consisting of Dub-Techno, Ambient, Jazz and Experimental creates a mixture of reflection and hope, which almost magically pulls the listener out of the moment.
 
A welcome break, as the moment is only a small fraction of our existence. Yet only the moment seems to make our existence truly tangible. Constantly we make plans and explore our memories, reflect on decisions and rehearse the future, assemble ourselves from the past and shape ourselves for the future. However, it is the moment that seems to determine everything and can distort everything we have experienced and planned beyond any recognition. This results in a dichotomy between the Acting Self and the Thinking Self that raises the question, what defines us more, what we think or what we do? Is our existence more than the sum of our actions?  Isn't there also a Timeless Self that emerges from past and future moments and thus creates the momentary or is the moment the actual 'being' ?

It isn't easy to describe the sound of dub music in philosophical terms because it is a subjective experience that can be interpreted differently by different people. However, using echo and reverb in dub music creates a sense of space and openness, reflecting philosophical ideas about the nature of existence and the vastness of the universe. The heavy use of bass and electronic instruments is also a reflection of modern philosophical ideas about technology and its role in shaping our world experience. Ultimately, the philosophical significance of dub music will depend on the individual listener and their interpretation of the music.
This set may pose more questions than answers, but some things are clear. It's a creative and masterful journey into dub.
