The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is growing a virtual interactive garden inspired by the works of one of the pre-eminent figures of 20th-century music: Krzysztof Penderecki, composer of the Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Symphony No. 7 “Seven Gates of Jerusalem” and Credo, whose music is widely admired by music lovers and musicians far outside traditional classical music circles. Krzysztof Penderecki died on 29 March 2020. Penderecki’s Garden is a virtual space inviting you to explore the great Polish composer’s achievements from diverse and complementary perspectives. The most important of these is the park in Lusławice, which the composer designed, developed and cultivated for half his life. Through the garden’s layout, architectural structures and vegetation, we present insight into the life of Penderecki alongside compositions, inspirations and poems. You are encouraged to listen to live concerts in various corners of the garden, visit the maze, and leave some memories in the rosarium.

We want to celebrate the story of Penderecki’s past, present and future and reveal who he was, is and will be. To show his continuing influence, the Institute is commissioning new tribute works in various genres, including the first such works here by Skalpel, Paweł Romańczuk and Robert Piotrowicz. Penderecki’s Garden, like his music, is for a global audience, and all the content is presented in English.

The project is part of the international cultural programme coordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, implemented as part of the NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-2022 multi-annual programme.

Penderecki's Garden

The guitarist Michał Milczarek has just finished his new album ‘Future: ON’, inspired by the work of sci-fi writer Stanisław Lem. The album is to be released on April 22nd in the form of sound art in collaboration with Mao Rui, author of the Chinese translation of ‘The Cyberiad’. The project is being supported by the Jazz Po Polsku Foundation and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Zbigniew Herbert, one of the most significant Polish poets of the 20th century. On this occasion, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute is implementing two projects: On the paths of Mr Herbert (seven stands set up in places that Zbigniew Herbert visited in the summer of 1959 in Siena and Orvieto and described in the Barbarian in the Garden) and the premiere of the play Clouds over Ferrara, inspired by Herbert's poem under the same title and produced by Teatro Pubblico Ligure. We recall the figure of the poet, believing that the message of his work remains a challenge that has not lost its relevance in 2024 and transcends the framework of Polish culture.

Wyspa Sobieszewska administracyjnie jest częścią Gdańska, a w szerszym ujęciu – Trójmiasta, milionowej metropolii nad Zatoką Gdańską.

Geograficznie to fragment Mierzei Wiślanej, a pod względem przyrody – raj dla ptaków i roślin wydmowych.

Granice tego mikrokosmosu od północy wyznacza Bałtyk, od wschodu, południa i zachodu – Wisła.

Wyspa Sobieszewska przyciąga przyrodników, biologów i amatorów-ornitologów. Wszyscy znajdują tu idealne warunki do pracy.

Wyspa jest scenerią niekończącego się słuchowiska. Warstwę akustyczną tworzą przede wszystkim dźwięki natury: ptasie krzyki, pomruki morza i pędzący wiatr. Towarzyszą im odgłosy pojazdów i starego mostu pontonowego, który niebawem zastąpi stała, bezgłośna przeprawa.

Fenomen Wyspy Sobieszewskiej przybliżają: dr Katarzyna Żółkoś, kierownik Stacji Biologicznej Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego i ornitolog Jakub Typiak.

Krajobrazy // Wyspa Sobieszewska: między Wisłą a Bałtykiem

Robert Piotrowski, historyk, regionalista i przewodnik zabiera nas w podróż po Gorzowie Wielkopolskim.

Miasto zniszczone w 1945 roku zostało odbudowane jako nieco inny organizm niż ten, który istniał przez poprzednich 700 lat.

Robert Piotrowski, choć uważa Gorzów za miasto bez pamięci, jest pełen zachwytu dla swojego miejsca na Ziemi: zna nie tylko każdy zakamarek i każdą kamienicę, ale też dawne plany i zdjęcia.

Dzięki temu doskonale umie sobie wyobrazić dawny Landsberg i porównać go z dzisiejszym Gorzowem – robotniczym, trochę antyinteligenckim, w którym w pierwszych powojennych latach każdy mógł być tym, kim chciał.

Krajobrazy // Gorzów Wielkopolski: niekończący się palimpsest

Szaro, smogowato i niereprezentacyjnie. Ubytki w zabudowie są dotkliwe tak jak dziury w zębach.

Krążą tu miejskie legendy o półświatku, mieszkają wyraziste charaktery, toczy proste, choć chropowate i szorstkie życie. Łódzki realizm magiczny.

Na przekór temu – albo w związku z tym – Łukasz z Bałut fotografuje swoją dzielnicę. Wchodzi na podwórka i strychy: wypatruje, dostrzega, zauważa. Obserwuje Bałuty z dachów czynszówek. Jeśli jest zbyt ładnie, uznaje to za powód do niepokoju…

Krajobrazy // Bałuty: chropowaty urok robotniczej Łodzi

To, co wielu uznaje za porażkę, w przypadku Tomasza Pileckiego okazało się atutem.

Nieskończone, a raczej: świadomie przerwane studia świetnie zapowiadającego się religioznawcy były początkiem życia na własnych warunkach.

Rozważania o spełnieniu swoich, a nie cudzych oczekiwań Tomasz Pilecki snuje na tarasie domu, który jego dziadek wybudował w Żegiestowie.

Drewniane siedlisko stoi na zboczu jednego z pasm Beskidu Sądeckiego. Jest tu warsztat stolarski, w którym Tomasz daje drugie, a czasem trzecie i kolejne życie przedmiotom.

W dolinie płynie Poprad, w rytmie rzeki suną pociągi towarowe. Ta sielska okolica pozwala spojrzeć na współczesność z mniej oczywistej strony.

The juxtaposition of Penderecki's concept with the sounds of contemporary electronic music shows how up-to-date his pioneering discoveries are. When the shock effect (caused by his experiment half a century ago) has passed, we can easily find ourselves in this world and hear its other dimensions. Also thanks to the penetration of Penderecki's music into the world of film, his language is perfectly understood by listeners in the 21st century. His decision to turn back and compose what he liked at the moment when he reached a (sound) wall in his experiments, also deserves respect. All of this inspired our composition.

I value Penderecki most of all for his powerful sound blows. I return especially often to ‘Cello Concerto No. 1’. I am also impressed by the precision and momentum and freedom of expression in compositions from the sonoristic period; the later work of the composer is beyond my interests. Penderecki would probably call me an amateur. With this thought in mind – and with fun in mind – I decided to prepare a work that does not resemble anything, completely unconsciously building vertical and horizontal sound bursts, which arrange themselves randomly and uncontrollably into a whole.

Robert Piotrowicz – Muzyka Amatorska

On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Wrocław Feature Film Studio, together with the Małe Instrumenty band, I prepared a kind of mix of fragments of music from Wojciech Jerzy Has' film. In turn, the instrument introduced by Krzysztof Penderecki has appeared many times in my own projects. These two elements are combined freely in the piece: the sound of the Jerusalem tubaphone meets the split rhythm inspired by ‘The Manuscript’.
