The beat only. I'm happy about it because we got about 90% of the whole song down in one night. The rest was pretty much just about refining the details, substracting rather than adding, and also moving things around in the structure. I was kind of "showing off" while producing it in front of Ceph kee, maybe that's the reason why I went so fast and did some cool sound design choices : I wanted to impress the dude. I probably wouldn't have done as much it if I was making this alone, just 'cause I'm lazy I'd say.

Mon Cœur, Dis-Moi (From the Webtoon "PSEUDO : ROMANCE") [feat. Justine Valès]

I started this song more than a year ago. The idea stemmed after listening to a lot of PJ Morton's stuff. I recorded the idea for the topline of the chorus in my voicenotes (October 1st, 2022), and the title of it was "Olga collab???" I knew there and then that I wanted to work with her and that her voice would be perfect for that melody.

In January of 2023, Théo Goude hosted a music camp at his place for a few days and I got to hang out with a lot of musicians in his circle, amongst whom was Olga. I told her about the song idea. She seemed down to do it so I made the beat from scratch really quickly. She laid down some ideas for the toplines for her verse. She told me the Logic bass sounds like shit, so I asked Ajaz (who just finished recording a song with her that day) to play the bassline I wrote on the song. I'm glad he did.

After the camp, working on the song became a long process. Not being physically in the same room with the people you work with makes it really hard to get your ideas across. Gathering the people to work on this song over the months truly felt like gathering the dragon balls. 

I managed to call up some of the musicians I met along the way, POLAZ and Roy Markson (both I have still never met in person !). I would've never been able to play their instruments at their level, and them freestyling over the song just adds that extra fairy dust. 

However, we had a few hiccups, too. Pab the Kid was supposed to have a rap verse on the song (it was the very first thing we ever recorded, he did it the very day I made the beat), but because of some issues we couldn't keep it. I was very sad because his verse is very good.

Olga then gave me the idea of calling up BLOU FEET to see if he would be down to replace Pab. When I proposed the gig to him, he sent me his stems that same night. Honestly, that gave me the energy I needed to pull through.

In the end, we did it. I love how the song came out and I'm glad that we didn't give up on it. We even shot a homemade music video at the same place the song was conceived : Théo Goude's apartment. Enjoy !

De base BLOU FEET était censé passer chez moi pour dormir, on s'est dit que c'était une bonne occasion de faire du son, peut être pour cook un petit truc pour le Verger. On a pas mal discuté avant de commencer à prod. Je lui ai fait écouter des chansons qui pourraient nous inspirer, et on a commencé à parler de ce qu'on aime dans le R&B, en essayant de trouver un "terrain d'entente". 

On a découvert que ce qui pouvait nous "lier" tous les deux c'est des chansons très lentes, à la Cigarettes After Sex ou John Mayer (BLOU FEET ne connaissait pas "Gravity", c'est ouf). On était très inspiré par "WAISTBIN" de John Robert.

Les paroles sont venues assez vite, et on a pratiquement passé une nuit blanche à record la maquette, juste le refrain (et on a fait le premier TikTok avec). BLOU est revenu la semaine d'après pour finir la chanson, après qu'on ait vu l'engouement qu'a provoqué le TikTok. The rest is history.

Abad x Cumulus. - Pleure Pas Pt. 2

I had the idea of the chorus melody while riding a vélib bike home from the errands. I kept singing the melody out loud to not forget it. It reminded me of the Chinese pop songs from the 70's-80's, like Teresa Teng. And Teresa Teng is my jam.

What I initially had in mind was a production similar to that of Silk Sonic's : very anchored in 70's soul codes. But when I started laying down the chords in Logic, I realized that they were the exact same as a bossa nova draft idea I had made earlier, with a completely different topline. I thought "why not try and combine both ideas at this point ?" (I kept the melody of the bossa idea at the end of the song, when I sing tha "tadadadadadadada..." part)

There was a version where the drum part of the solo (it is a sample) was playing during the whole song, with no bossa nova rhythm at all. I liked that version too because it was closer to what I had in mind when the melody came to me. But I ended up choosing the bossa nova drums because it had a certain charm to it. And also it was the joy of combining both ideas that sparked the production of this song. I was really influenced by the simplicity of Laufey's production of "Falling Behind". 

As for the lyrics, I wrote them as close as I could to the yoghurt I mumbled in the first voice note. I really like the storytelling side of it. I am also very proud of the rhymes I found for the chorus, they weren't easy to dream up but after some trial and error I think I found a good balance. I also wrote some parts in Chinese, because the song reminded me of Chinese songs. 

I recorded the vocals between Ho-Chi-Minh and Beijing. You can hear crickets in most of the recordings because I recorded in my room late at night, it was so hot that I had to keep the window open for airflow, and you could hear the chirping of crickets from outside. I was bummed when I was recording the vocals, but now I'm glad they're there. I don't even need to add them in : They were really there singing with me.

I had a hard time convincing myself that the song was finished. It was pretty much 90% done since last summer, but somehow I still wanted to add stuff to it. And not knowing what to add, plus the fear of not being able to do a better job than what I already did, resulted in the months and months of the song just sitting in my laptop, not being updated in any way.

I ended up deciding to release the song as it is, because I know that if I touch it I would ruin it. I am no longer in the same headspace as when I made it, so I wouldn't make the right choices. Even for the mix, I used one that dated back from January, it was supposed to be a test but it just sounded better than my latest mix done in haste.

I hope you enjoy this little song. It came straight out of my brain and my heart.

We wrote this song with Hidem in one session at my place back in May. It was the first session we ever did, after almost a year of back & forths in our DMs trying to match our availabilities.

I pulled up a bachata remix I made a while ago from Drake & Travis Scott's song "Fair Trade" (the final project file's name is still "fair trade" lol), played it for Hidem and he liked it so we started writing on it.

To be honest I didn't know at that point what would come out of it, but somehow we bounced off of each other's ideas pretty fluently and we ended up recording a "maquette" version on that same night, with the speakers blasting the music.

Hidem stayed the night because we worked until very late. He later came back another day to record his final vocals, but 95% of the lyrics & intentions all came from the initial session we did.

The initial burst of energy and creativity you get at the beginning of a project is very precious. I pretty much spent the rest of the time tweaking little details here and there, adding/subtracting adlibs, fixing wrong notes, changing parts of the beat... But overall, the final result sounds very much like the maquette we had, just way cleaner and with more intricacies. Music is fun.

BLOU FEET - NE M'EN VEUX PAS (Cumulus. Techno Remix)

I wrote this piece of music in collaboration with Hugo Michalet as the soundtrack of the farewell movie we made for Fred.

This year was Fred's last year as a teacher in Gobelins, and our coordinator Thomas told us that we could maybe do another little surprise movie for him, since we already did it twice in the past years. When we started brainstorming on what we could do for him, we agreed with Hugo that we wanted to do something big. Something that both of us have never attempted before, to close this trilogy with a bang.

Hugo decided to direct the movie, animating Fred using a voice recording of his by one of his students, and the movie ended up having a lot of students and senior animators helping on it.

The beautiful backgrounds are made by William Burger with pencils on paper.

For my part, I wanted to create a full choir using the real voices of Fred's students. For two months, we organised dozens of recording sessions at school (without Fred ever noticing), recording the voices of the new students, the old students and the pedagogy team.

Everyone sang their heart out to the same melody we wrote with Hugo in the hours after lunch, in the empty cafeteria. We wanted to create a Disney/Les Choristes type of vibe, so I tried my best to capture the emotions throughout the movie. 

Working with Hugo in every step of the process resulted in a very organic and beautiful film, and it brought Fred to tears when he saw it.

Fred. (tribute to Fred Nagorny) [feat. Les Gobelins]

I started this song with Noah Naas in mind. I knew it was a banger even before I started producing it. I had a very clear idea of the topline of the chorus, and it made me excited to start working on it. 

I started the instrumental in Vietnam during my summer vacations in 2024. I wanted this song to condense everything that I love about 2000´s R&B, from The Neptunes' productions to Timbaland's. Of course, it's very hard to make choices and feel genuine about all of them. I created a playlist on Spotify called "Obsession ref" where I put all the songs that I might steal a little piece from.

The structure came really quickly, for the percussions I took a lot of the iconic sound effects from that era. I also off-gridded the drums by hand to give them a more laid-back, human feel.

Noah Naas was actually the first guy to record his verse on the song. He sent me his first draft back when I was still in Vietnam. I was flabbergasted. I then recorded the topline for my verse in Beijing, and kept workshopping the words for the months that came after.

When I got back in Paris, Noah came by my place and we recorded the final versions of his parts over several sessions. I pushed him to do more R&B runs, and we ended up with a very soulful result which we both love.

The guitar parts in the beginning and the rest of the song were initially all MIDI, and that bothered me for a long time. I asked a few people to play real acoustic guitar over it (including BLOU FEET), but no one had the time. Tired of chasing after people, I asked my brother who started learning guitar this past year. We were in Beijing for the Xmas holidays, and I didn't bring any audio gear with me so I recorded him with my iPhone. The result adds so much texture to the "quantized-ness" of the MIDI, and we don't even notice that it was recorded using a phone. We also shot my part of the music video during that same vacation.

The song started really taking shape. A few months went by, I also recorded my parts, and we thought the song was done. I send it to my friend Rodd, who is my pianist, and he loved it so much that he straight up called me in the middle of his train ride. He told me there and then that all the song needed more was a synth solo.

He sent me a few versions of the solo, and I ended up going to his place to record the final version with him. I told him that I wanted the solo to "speak", kind of like the talkbox intro from "24k Magic". That's when Rodd pulled up his very own talkbox. I was shook. We then spent the rest of the evening writing and recording that talkbox solo, and it was truly the best surprise feature on the song. Now when I listen to it, I always wait for the solo to come in.

All in all, we're all very proud of this song. We hope you love it like we do. 💫
