We have arrived in Chicago ahead of the 17th International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IASSID) conference. We have an exciting week ahead of us. 

Our first podcast of the week was recorded before our first morning at the conference. We discuss what it means to be here and what is on the agenda for the coming week.

Episode 7: The A-team arrive in Chicago for IASSIDD

The British Museum cares for a large collection of tao'a (treasures) from the Pacific island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), many of which are seen as living entities and extensions of people. Over the years, these collections have been a significant resource for the community and the centre of multiple collaborative projects, including the making of Recalling Home.  

This audio offering honours the relation of Rapanui tao'a, including two moai: Hoa Hakananai'a, and Moai Hava. Created in collaboration with Rapanui artists and scholars, the offering is a composition of natural and human-made sounds recorded to evoke a day on Easter Island. Bringing the sounds of their island to London acts as a bridge between Rapa Nui and the Museum, attempting to shrink the space between the treasures and home.

This audio is composed of a variety of sounds, including seabirds, woodcarving, city traffic, ocean waves and fire accompanied by guitar, flute and human voices.

Recalling Home – A Soundscape Offering

In July 2024 the Phelan US Centre spoke to Nathan Lane, Associate Professor in Economics at Oxford University, about industrial policy in the United States and its history, including recent policies from the Biden administration like the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act. They also discussed how US industrial policy might change depending on who wins the 2024 presidential election.   This episode was produced by Chris Gilson and Anderson Tan.  

LSE: The Ballpark | US Industrial Policy with Professor Nathan Lane

Domna Ladopoulou, a researcher in the Department of Statistical Science at UCL, is working on improving the efficiency and reliability of wind energy production through statistical and machine learning modelling approaches. Her research focuses on developing a probabilistic condition monitoring system for wind farms using SCADA data to detect faults and failures early. This system aims to enhance the sustainability of wind farms by reducing maintenance costs and improving overall reliability. 

Donna's methodology involves non-parametric probabilistic methods like Gaussian processes and probabilistic neural networks, which offer flexibility and computational efficiency. She emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making in sustainability and the potential for her research to be scaled globally, particularly in regions with high wind power reliance.

Sustainability in Statistical Modelling of Wind Energy with Domna Ladopoulou

This episode of LSE iQ explores whether gender pay gap reporting, pay transparency and tackling gender norms can reduce the gender pay gap.  

On average across the globe, for every pound earned by a man, a woman earns around 80 pence, according to a 2023 report from the United Nations.  

 

But despite huge advances in access to education, the labour market, and the introduction of the UK Equality Act of 2010, which guarantees equal pay for men and women doing equal work, those figures have pretty much remained the same for the past two decades. Still, the gender pay gap - the difference between the average earnings of men and women - endures. So, how can we solve it?  

 

Anna Bevan talks to broadcaster Jane Garvey about the impact of gender pay gap reporting and what happened to her after the BBC was forced to publish its gender pay gap report.  

 

She also speaks to Nina Rousille, the Executive Director of LSE’s Hub for Equal Representation and Assistant Professor of Economics at MIT, about the role of the Ask Gap and pay transparency, and Camille Landais, Professor of Economics at LSE about the Child Penalty.

In 2024, the Phelan US Centre ran an essay competition for master’s students with the prompt, ““How should the United States work to shape the future of capitalism in this age of insecurity?”. 

We speak to the author of the winning essay, David Millman, and the runners-up, Yazmin Baptiste and Manickam Valliappan. We discuss their essays, the competition, what it’s like for students to engage with a wider audience, and the opportunity they had to present their essays in the UK parliament to MPs and the British-American Parliamentary Group.
