Andu Simion – Lunar Reinterpretations EP

Searching for a distinct sound, a dreamy soundscape that will reach both the mind and the soul, Particular has found the perfect man to deliver their first release.

Co-founder of the Lisière Collectif project, Andu Simion comes from the outskirts of Ploiești, Romania and you can hear the industrial side of the city in his sound. It’s safe to say that, while clearly being inspired by the Romanian minimal movement, he has crafted his own particular style: a deep, if maybe just a little acid-infused journey that has landed him last year a huge release on Atipic, Priku’s label.

This vinyl-only release starts off with Got To Be Real, a track full of overlapping percussions that steal the show, at least until the heavy bassline unleashes and the sudden change works wonders, making the listener want to get his feet moving. The second track on the A side, Aquarium 00 (name is inspired by the 2000’s internet café called Aquarium located in Ploiești), is certainly a change in tone and a more moody affair, full of trippy and stirring sounds, a welcome contrast that works perfectly.

The transition to the B side is a smooth one, as Broken Arch carries this mood on with a heavy bass line that manages somehow to stay in the background, letting the serene sounds on the surface take over. 

Azureh, the track that closes things off, is a slow burner and the recurrent but eerie vocal is probably the only constant here, setting up the mood for a track that is constantly evolving. The percussion become more illustrious, the bass grows stronger and a deep, celestial, shivers-inducing sound appears gradually in the background.

Romana Records is a new vinyl-only label from Magnus Asberg, a musician many of you will doubtless know thanks to his work under his C-Soul alias. A fierce proponent of all things house and techno over the past three decades, Magnus continues to be active in the house and techno scenes, and over the years has lent his expert, astute sounds to renowned labels such as Plastic City, Ornate Music, Viva Recordings, Oh So Coy & On The House Records. 

The label kicks off here courtesy of the brilliant sounds of the Life EP,  a funky, uptempo slab of classy, top-drawer house that’s sure to appeal to fans of such sounds. Contemporary sounding but with roots that stretch back to the halcyon days of tech-house’s golden era, chances are if you’ve ever partied at one of London’s famous Wiggle parties (or even Mr C’s Superfreq shindigs) then you’ll have an idea of what we’re talking about here. So who better to get things underway than Silverlining? Unusually, it’s the remixer who is first up here, and needless to say, his interpretation of ‘Life’ is a thoroughly impressive one. Taking the original by the horns, he reinterprets things as only he knows how, calling on sparse parts but layering it with a heightened sense of groove and deepness for which he’s well known. Silverlining’s contribution here is a fitting accompaniment to the original, that’s for sure. 

The B side comprises solely of Asberg’s original version of ‘Life’. Full of clever percussion, this is a track that keeps the energy high. Loaded with suspense, it’s the perfect cut with which to keep the dancefloor ticking over with great momentum. Very much a tale of two sides -- with each one boasting their own appeal - Romana Records really does get off to a flyer here.

PREMIERE: Magnus Asberg - Life (Silverlining Remix) [Romana Records]

Ever in search of the freshest and most forward thinking minimal talent, Ukrainian label Modeight returns with its 10th release. This milestone 12” sees the imprint tap Canadian beat smith ckb, who delivers an intimate and groovy affair entitled “Round-Robin”. Now based in Leeds, the Canadian has spent over a decade exploring both contemporary and left field production techniques. Working meticulously to strike a healthy balance between the two that delivers on the dancefloor. ckb certainly accomplishes this across the Ep, as the youngster fires up with 4 distinctive cuts that are energized by complex rhythmic elements and heady atmospheric tones. A well deserved feature for the Canadian who is a perfect addition to the Modeight family.
