Just for the fun of it, sound recordist Pete Smith sets out to record the weird and wonderful high-pitched sound of hazel grouse calling in the forests of Finland, not far from the Russian border. Leaving his microphones out overnight, he's able to capture fantastic recordings of greenshank and woodcock, along with a host of other interesting species... but will he find the bird he's looking for?

This is the story of the oldest music in the world.

Humans have been making music for tens of thousands of years, and although the music itself is lost to us, occasionally we find the strangest and most beautiful traces of it - from musical stalactites in Spain to flutes made of bird bone and mammoth ivory.

This programme is a journey into forgotten caves, dusty museums and ancient valleys, to discover the surviving fragments of our musical past.
