My teacher Margaret Baxtresser. LIVE performance, 1981, Ludwig Recital Hall at Kent State University. From one of the Naumburg programs she played back in the early 50's... I seem to remember that she resurrected it 30 years later (?)... According to what I have managed to put together, Maggie won that award at 18, and two years later she married Earl. During their early years (photo is from that time) she was studying in Philly in the Kapell/Samaroff circle, and with the Rev. Dr. Charles DeBodo (who willed her his prized 1878 Bechstein that Brahms had played, which is now in a museum in Madison). Philipp had been on the Naumburg jury that gave her the award. Through DeBodo, whom she regarded as her most important teacher by far, her piano lineage traces directly back to Liszt, Czerny and Beethoven. Somewhere I have a dub of the Audiophile red vinyl recording she made ca. 1952, which included the Debussy "Fireworks" -- best ever, corroborated by Gina Bachauer, who said to her "you're the only person who actually plays ALL of the notes!" BRAHMS Sonata in C Major

ECLOGUE is a one movement work in 3 broad sections about 23 minutes long. It contrasts the sense of natural space and resonance with that of urban and internal agitation. The opening owes its character to ringing sonorities and a haunting octave melody developed in various ways. The middle section introduces musical fragments which build to an extended, virtuosic highpoint. The reposeful conclusion allows echoes and reverberations of earlier events to fade and be reflected upon.
