The broad concept of eclecticism takes on a new level of excellence and depth when Lydia González, known in the music world as T.Modet, stands behind a mixer and a pair of turntables. Born in Seville, she received a valuable family musical heritage that was quickly expanded and enriched with a new and enormous spectrum of sounds and influences resulting from her extensive travels around the world from a very early age.
In Barcelona we are lucky to be able to enjoy her always surprising and colorful selections thanks to a regular presence in the bills of the best clubs and festivals in the city (Laut, Nitsa, Mira, Primavera Sound, Sonar, Sound It, Brunch ...) alone as T.Modet or with Virginie, another voracious digger and excellent DJ,  under the alias Shakti Alliance. In a more experimental and electronic way, in a global discovery format without borders or labels (take a tour of the archive of her wonderful programs Círculo de Borneo for dublab radio), or moving feet and cheering souls on the best dance floors with her inimitable sets, there is no doubt that T.Modet is a polyhedral and absolutely free artist that we admire and enjoy. So we are very pleased to present here this exclusive selection of 10 songs for Curtis Radio that show the beauty, substance and originality of T.Modet's musical palette. Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. 

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being. 

Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. 

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. 

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.” 

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.” 

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.

ANKA FOH - KOUNADY EP

Anka Foh is made up of multi-talented Malian singer/composer/songwriter and producer Dasmy Djo and French electronic music producer/DJ/composer and Curuba label head Ditti. The duo met at a series of culture mashing jam sessions between musicians from all over the world in Paris’ underground bars. The two artists clicked and came together to work on some of Dasmy’s compositions - within a few months they formed Anka Foh.

Shika Shika is excited to share their first EP, Kounady, four tracks of much needed upbeat, joyful, soul music that finds a magical sweet spot between Dasmy’s original compositions, inspired by Mandingue traditional music, and Ditti’s jubilant electronica.

Though the fours compositions are rooted in the West African mandingue tradition, they are taken into a whole new context. Dasmy’s vocals and instrumental lines sit alongside swirling, airy melodies, swaggering beats and Ditti’s trademark bleeps and psychedelic, dreamy synths - the recipe for an explosion of delicious flavours and colours.

This is summed up on opener Bara or the driving electro-blues track Tâtâ, a song about giving thanks to those that helped and supported us in our lives. The EP ends with the fittingly beautiful lullaby Kounady (a mandingue word that roughly translates as luck) about how we have to look after ourselves and avoid negativity.

On this celebration of borderless music, Anka Foh have created an uplifting and refreshing debut. Music that somehow combines the dancefloor, douceur (sweetness) and melancholy but, most of all, a big dose of fun.

Our space has been designed to offer a pleasant listening experience and a feelgood comfy vibe. DJ sessions every weekend and a great selection of records, books and magazines to browse, listen, read and buy.
