This is how the play opened sonically; starting on a busy, modern New York subway. A woman exits the tube, and believes she is being followed. She turns around in the busy street and realised she was just being paranoid. She puts in her headphones, and gets out a book - in order to get away from the mania of modern day life - and it is from that that we 'drop' into the first scene of the play; on a porch in 1930s Florida.

Opening Scene from Their Eyes Were Watching God

This is the scene where Janie enters into a repetitive series of movements, symbolising the passing of time under her new husband - Joe Starks. Time moves very quickly, spanning almost 10 years, before one day Joe 'hit her until there was a ringing sound in her ears'. The large glass smash at the end was MIDI'd with some clever projection to make the broken mirror on the back wall look like it was being shattered.

I'm a strong supporter of the thought that theatre is all about being there, in the moment; it's impossible to effectively recreate sounds that were crafted to compliment certain actions and text, mixed to fit certain rooms and theatres, and created to work with lighting, video and other production elements.
