IDEAL is Curtismith’s first compiled release of tracks under one theme, the mixtape is a collection of tracks from producers he has personally worked with and covers off of eats from music he’s been influenced by.

Included are tracks from CRWN, also part of his home collective LOGICLUB, a track from Beat Sampras, a producer based in Cape Town, South Africa. Also included are tracks he rapped on from 40, J. Dilla, Jazzual Suspects, Timbaland, Flamingosis, OHD, and Outkast.

Mito Fabie, AKA Curtismith, once caught a billboard of (as you may already have guessed) Anne Curtis—and plucked the surname of one of the country’s most recognizable faces and made it his moniker. And it’s the same clever, somewhat ironic referencing that he applies to his first mixtape release, out Sep 4.

IDEAL, an optimistic and introspective debut, explores the tension, anxiety, and ambition of  the rapper who is often see-sawing between confidence and doubt. Many of the tracks sound like a succession of interrogations, addressed to himself—with questions like “am I good enough?” on “Currently”—it’s almost like watching Curtismith perform a monologue in front of a mirror. With a narrative refined by samples culled from movies like Goodfellas and The Great Dictator, and a host of collaborators like CRWN, Sampras, and Similarobjects—the verses flow, consistent in its storytelling, and curious all throughout. 

“I’ve got all these dreams”, he coos in “For The Love”, but IDEAL peaks at “philo(watts)”, which features a vibrant horn section. It’s the kind of mixtape that swells, from one’s bedroom to a corner in the crowd. “I got this, I promise”, he affirms on his first track. He could very well be right.
