There has been some improvements on the adoption front but there is still lots of work left to place children in care with new families. According to the Representative for Children and Youth, small improvements have been made especially where it concerns aboriginal children in care.  So far this year 69 aboriginal children, who represent a significant number of children needing adoption, have found families while another 31 have adoption plans. Also the number of First Nations homes willing to take in a child has improved slightly going from 44 to 56. However the last report found at any given time 1000 kids need to find families. Currently 974 children are waiting for a home, among them 617 are under 12 years old.  Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond says it remains to be seen if the ministry will achieve its goal of 600 adoptions over a two year period.
