@thisisstatue is a live percussion based dance project, the brainchild of Melbourne drummer Tom Gould. Over the past five years he has honed his craft in cult Melbourne bands NO ZU and Worlds End press but now greets the dance world under the moniker STATUE. After featuring in last years Beats In Space - best of the year list with his debut 12", his second EP ‘Monument' is a reflection of the human and a testament to dance floors both indoor and out. MONUMENT further establishes STATUE as a fixture in Melbourne’s dance music culture, constructed for both warm afternoons and the sweaty early hours of Australian summer.

The EP traverses multiple tempos, creating a world of warm percussive dance floor odysseys arriving parched and thirsty for more at it’s aural peak, Monument. The expedition ends with an expansive remix by Disco Halal king pin and recent ESP Institute alumni, Moscoman.

Things reach a climactic conclusion with the sun peaking over the horizon, but the party still in full swing as WHEN YOU'RE OUT unfurls it's snake-like arpeggiators and bewitching rhythm track, up to the heavens, then slowly back down to earth. Maybe it feels like dusk… or maybe it's more like dawn; it probably doesn't matter. AS MUCH AGAIN will be the perfect soundtrack.

Building on the solid foundations of his debut release ‘Channel / All This’ and the anthemic vinyl-only beast ‘Dance To The Rhythm’ Nile Delta's third outing provides the most effortless and promising release to date. 

Nile Delta offers us two versions of the title track, "Aztec"; one crafted for early and one for the heart of night. 
The original is a slow-strutting house track propelled by hypnotic congas, bubbling acid lines and a trance-like vocal chant provided byJohn Parkinson of rising Melbourne band Worlds End Press. The late night '12" Mix' leaves restraint at the door, and goes straight for the jugular with an acid-led assault primed for peak hour.  It's impossible to resist as the vocal commands the dance floor to "Build it up, sweat it out until it's done".

The B-side "Achilles" is similarly ancient in title, but futuristic in nature. It infuses the unlikely combination of driving acid rhythms and wonky filtered samples to floor-filling effect. 

The release is accompanied by some great remixes of "Aztec". Emerging acieeed king Roland Tings (100% Silk) creates an irresistible hook-filled house groove out of re-pitched vocal stabs and metallic synths. John Talabot's collaborator, Pional (Permanent Vacation) brings a deft production touch to his piano-house rework*. Finally we're offered a blazing main-room remix with flames ignited by rising star of the US dance scene, Plastic Plates (Kitsune)**.

NO ZU extend their very own world of percussive groove and "Heat Beat" into deeper territories than ever on their “Hi Gloss EP” which will be released next week. And to give us our first taste they have unveiled the title track “Hi Gloss” for our listening pleasure. 

Hi Gloss sets the tone for the EP - one of wild-abandon boogie and no-wave styled house that when fused together is uniquely NO ZU. Triple X funk and NSFW moods continue to flow and mutate throughout the EP with hedonistic freedom. 

Nicolaas Oogjes of the band explains; "Hi Gloss has been a live favorite of ours for some time! Just a simple, straight up house jam we can lose ourselves in and feel instinctively as a band. It's a zonked-out blast of a track. The song is inspired by ideas of luxury, high glamour and swimming in bright blue oceans with make-up on - a bit of a departure from some of our more sordid themes. We felt that Hi Gloss needed it's day in the sun and that it was a perfect point to build an extended release around."

The EP comprises four new songs, including an improvised late night jam with Sal Principato of legendary NY group Liquid Liquid, and in addition there is a remix of their recent single “Ui Yia Uia” by LA boogie-man, Moon B (PPU, 1080p).




NO ZU - Hi Gloss

One half of defunct Aussie duo Riot In Belgium - now producing under the Nile Delta pseudonym - pops up with a rather tasty release on Cut Copy's Cutters imprint. The sun-drenched house-isms of "Channel" roll elegantly into "All This", which sees some remix action on the flip. The Chicken Lips malfunction is an acid tinged chugger, while Australian producer Tornado Wallace chimes in with a boompty mid tempo house workout.

Since first emerging from Melbourne's smoke-machine laden dance floors of the late '00s, Mike Gamwell's penchant for forward-thinking electronica paired with meticulous production has entrenched him in the consciousness of avid dance music enthusiasts and casual listeners alike. 

Having signed to Cutters Records, Gamwell released a string of EPs and high-profile remixes that succintly encapsulated the sights and sounds of the ever-evolving electronic landscape.

After a three year hibernation following 2011's I Want You EP, Gamwell finally returned to the fold with his Tangerine Dream-inspired cut Don't Stop opening Cut Copy's Oceans Apartcompilation, a collection of Australia's foremost producers in which he featured alongside fellow Melbourne dance royalty Tornado Wallace, Andras Fox and Roland Tings. Don't Stop was then released as an EP in early 2015, which also featured a cosmic rinse of the title track by Running Back and Rush Hour's disco don Suzanne Kraft alongside an original acidic number titled Interstate 08.

Having since relocated to Bath in the UK, supporting Cut Copy DJs on their recent tour of the USA and headlining Cooper Saver’s decadent Far Away party in Los Angeles, Gamwell is set to round out 2015 with the release of his four-track EP VII. A refinement of the hedonistic sounds from his previous releases, this record reveals a concoction of house, acid and slow-burning balearic rhythm structures, stripping back the layers and re emerging from the haze.

Now, they return to Cutters Records to share ADULT CONCEPTS: a celebration of the year’s end and a snapshot of what can be expected of Ara Koufax in 2016.

Adult Concepts is the sound of coping mechanisms and the lure of quitting. Originally written as an introduction to the duos’s live show, the release’s titular track emerged from rehearsals in a sunburnt, claustrophobic apartment. At its core, Adult Concepts is an exercise in building full, driving house music from a bedrock of noise: a hangover of Spacemen 3 worship and lack of restraint.

You maybe have wondering why things have been a little quiet lately, but that’s only because we’ve been busy behind the scenes doing what labels do; turning the cogs of the record industry, scouring for diamonds in the rough and through the use of magic, fashioning them into future hits.

So anyway… having gotten that out of the way, we now have a stack of exciting 12″s and EPs queued up to unleash over the coming weeks. And followers of Cutters will be pleased to know that first up is a new 12″ single from Knightlife.

For those who are wondering, he’s been decorating his lounge room for the last 12 months with a shrine-like arrangement of synthesizers, obscure disco 12 inches and a spaghetti of patch leads. He’s almost finished now, so someone at cutters politely suggested maybe he should put another 12″.

Not only did he oblige, but he has also got an 8 track EP titled ‘I Want You‘ ready to release on cutters at the end of this month. The lead track, ‘Serves You Right‘ gives us the first taste of the fruits of his labour, a futuristic disco gem available on 12″ in just a couple of days. Along with it comes an awesome Emperor Machine remix and dancefloor bomb ‘Otherway‘.

Tunnel Signs is the nom de plume of Australian born lover, fighter and romantic, Ash Moses. With a taste for playing and producing records that embrace the darkness, Moses parts the sea and finds the wonky middle ground between reverb drenched postpunk, hypnotic techno and spaced out disco. Having previously seen releases on labels such as Nein, Clouded Vision and HAKT he now finds a home with Cutters Records with this 12” with Will Buck.

The release, titled “Spirits” came into existence when Ash relocated to New York City, a place he had long dreamed of from afar. As luck would have it he found himself sharing an apartment with another likeminded electronic musician named Will Buck who became his studio-partner and eventual collaborator. Having bonded over a shared love of synthesizers, drum machines and all things rhythm they soon began their own freeform jam sessions which paved the way for this 12” release.

“Spirits” shares some of the slow hypnotic swagger and dark disco drone of Red Axes and Multi Culti but with a futuristic percussive palette of the likes of Four Tet. The heady modulated elastic synth sounds give way to deep undulating bass patterns and tribal percussion. On the flip, the lights get turned out and the acid turned up with an ominous Techno rework courtesy of Hivern Disc’s own Marc Piñol.

All Night is a dazzling cut of future disco with the haunted house vocals of Sydney band Ghoul’s Ivan Vizintin. The flip, Q.E.2., is the kind of late night low-slung disco-not-disco groove that exists purely for the freak folk after the 4am mark.

A selection of remixes of All Night are on offer, with Canucks Azari & III delivering the kind of jacking rubber funk they’re fast gaining a reputation for. Ilja Rudman slows turns the ohms waaaay doooooown and takes the party to a hazy beach party right around 3am, while In Flagranti work themselves into their typically convulsing so wrong it’s right spazz dance. German outfit Munk turn in a tactfully restrained, spacious take, while the mysterious Turkish Prison give All Night the kind of creepy organ donation it always deserved.

He’s been called the baron of the beats, a knight of life, the life of the night, or even occasionally plain Mike Gamwell, To you and I though, he is only Knightlife. Long considered to be Cutters Records’ secret weapon and he’s back with his 4th release on cutters, I Want You.

Wow, what a week! It’s hard to believe we’ve been blessed with two knightlife releases. First was the Serves You Right 12″ and now the mothership has come to earth in the form of the 8 track, I Want You EP which is Mr Knightlife’s most substantial release to date, and his best (in our humble, clearly unbiased opinion). It also features the remix talents of the rather excellent Weekend Express, Bobby Boomerang and The Emperor Machine. And the cover artwork (seen above) comes courtesy of the tasteful and talented folk at Alter.

We could blabber on all day about it, but I think at this point the best strategy is to listen to it yourself and get acquainted. There are plenty of things in life that you may end up regretting, but this is definitely NOT one of them! Go forth and enjoy.

Lover Motion is a pulsating solo effort from electro crooning man-child and Cut Copy Ben Browning is the shiniest, newest addition to the Cutters stable of artists. 

The evergreen man and aficionado of classic and futuristic pop is of course no stranger to the Cutters crew. Browning cut his teeth as enigmatic frontman of Melbourne space rock jam band the Ca$inos, churning out undiscovered-classics ranging from 60's tinged pop to kraut style jam outs. After playing with various other projects including cutters alumni Damn Arms, he was called upon to perform his aforementioned 'live bass' duties for Cut Copy around the time of release of their breakthrough album In Ghost Colours and has subsequently become a fully fledged member of the group which continues to tour like a beast possessed.  

Prior to starting on Cut Copy's most recent album Zonoscope, however, Browning began penning tracks for a solo release, culminating in this EP which has just been released on Cutters Records. 

For a guy who once recorded a whole album of original Christmas-themed material in a matter of weeks when short on gift ideas for friends and family, the two year gestation period for this EP has been comparatively exhaustive, but certainly worth the wait. After most of the basic tracks were home spun, the talents of Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott (Architecture in Helsinki) were enlisted to add production and shimmer to the finished product. The pair re-effected and mixed the recordings, with Franklin and Lachlan Dickie (one half of film directing duo Krozm) also providing live-drums to some of the original tracks. Meanwhile, Cut Copy's own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the classic keyboard tones herein. 

The lead song I Can't Stay opens with an almost calypso guitar lead, before opening up into bouncing rhythmic bass-driven club-pop, the likes of which wouldn't have been entirely out of place on the recent Cut Copy album. The vocal is trademark Ben Browning: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility.  Evidence for this is no more clear than on Mistaken Images, an intricate piece of longing with Browning's unmistakeable but unexpected turn of melodic phrase. It's the sort of tune Jeff Lynne might pipe through the ship's intercom to drift off to, shortly after he's set the controls to 'Oblivion'. Feels Like is a smooth piece of work propelled by a bass line which pops in all the right places. The EP is rounded out by two moody instrumentals. Bullet Island is a cosmic 'builder', complete with guest sonic-muscle from Shags Chamberlain (of Melbourne band Lost Animal). And the mellow, slow groove of Night Dunes takes you to exactly the sort of place you might expect a song entitled Night Dunes could take you.

Beyond merely offering feedback, Szekeres went ahead and added to the songs, initiating a workflow than became an almost wordless conversation between the two, as files drifted back and forth with the currents until deemed done.

Since their inception, the Miracles Club have embarked on a mission spreading the joys of classic dance music vibes with a unique pop twist. The U&Me EP is their most accomplished release to date, featuring two irresistable original tracks and equally solid remixes from Nile Delta, Ultimate Man and Discodromo.

Their style draws from an endless palette including early New York & Chicago house, Detroit techno, and psychedelic pop. On stage The Miracles Club have manifested live alongside acts like Larry Heard, Glass Candy, Gang Gang Dance, MikeQ, Kim Ann Foxman, Blondes, and Hunee.

From 2010 onward they have released 12” EPs and provided remixes on labels and imprints such as Cutters, Mexican Summer, Wurst, Ecstasy (their own homegrown shop), Discaire, Future Classic and DFA.
