Cumbia is is a dance-oriented music genre popular throughout Latin America. By the 1940s cumbia began spreading from the coast to other parts of Colombia, then by the 1950s cumbia was migrating across Colombia's northern and southern borders, first to Ecuador and Peru, then Mexico and Argentina, and eventually into the rest of Spanish-speaking Central and South America.
Chicha is the name of a corn-based liquor that has been produced in South America since the time of the Incas. It is also the name of a Peruvian musical genre (also known as Peruvian cumbia). This genre is a fusion of rock and roll and cumbia produced by the native population of the Peruvian Andes and Amazon. This music was most popular in the 1960s and 70s in Northern Peru.
