Denovali Records is proud to announce the release of John Lemke's debut album in July 2013. As an appetizer we offer the 'Walizka' EP as a digital only release, it contains only tracks not available on the album. We also offer the song 'Traveller', which is also not contained on the album, and a remix by Emperor Echo as a free download.

PEOPLE DO [CD|LP|DIGITAL]

John Lemke is a Glasgow based composer & sound designer, originally from Berlin. Working across a great variety of media he explores music and all things sonic through collaborations, live performance, film sound design and especially his work as a documentary composer for the BBC and Channel 4.

Motivated by fusing elements of his more emotive film composition approach with rhythm and space, John creates a distinctive sound blend on his debut solo album, where percussive, prepared piano collides with abstracted guitar landscapes & disembodied vocal textures to form a danceable, electro-acoustic whole. 

Inside the creaking hollows of an attic treasure begins the uncompromising journey of People Do. Eager to devise a more dance oriented sound on his first full length release with Denovali, and contrasting his more ambient, often orchestral film work, John first found inspiration in the idiosyncratic sound world of his grandmother's piano. With a shimmering past in the silent film era of 1920's Berlin, its very fabric was full of anecdotes. But sampling every string and surface, preparing it with kitchen utensils, let alone playing the instrument itself was only the starting point of the intricately woven narrative of People Do.

With a process including techniques of musique concrète, sound design concepts such as worldising (playing back and re-recording sound through a room) and the use of homemade field recordings from all around Europe, the album is filled with depth and a true sense of voyage. This is also reflected in the various locations the record was conceived and recorded in, ranging from Berlin to Bristol, Helsinki to rural Spain and Glasgow, with guest contributions on viola from Kim Moore (Ex-Zoey Van Goey) and Felipe Sumina (saxophone), only for it to be mastered at Durton Studio by Nils Frahm.

John's dedication to ignoring genre boundaries makes for an album impossible yet needless to categorise, echoing its wide ranging influences, but ultimately existing entirely on its own terms.

Liebe Leute,
dieses Set habe ich entwickelt für Studien der bewussten Erweiterungen.
Durch die C-Zeit, einem traurigen Verlust eines geliebten Menschen und der freudigen Geburt unseres Kindes im letztem Jahr habe ich angefangen, mich mit einigen Techniken auseinanderzusetzen, die darauf ausgelegt sind, das Bewusstsein raus aus dem Kopf und wieder in den Körper zu bringen. Auf das man der Weisheit des Körpers wieder "lauschen" kann.

Auf diesem Gebiet gibt es viele spannende Disziplinen, zum Beispiel:
die craniosacrale Selbstbehandlung, die Bioenergetik, das holotrope Atmen, Meditation, Traumyoga und luzides Träumen, Hemi-Sync, Tanz in Trance, Schamanismus, Klangtherapie, der taoistische Weg, Qi Gong, Jin Shin Jyutsu und natürlich das Tantra, welches durch seinen Leitsatz: "Es ist sowohl als auch." vermag, sämtliche Bereiche unter einen Hut zu bringen, bzw. zu verweben.

Im Zuge meiner Recherchen habe ich mich natürlich auch musikalisch inspirieren lassen und so hat sich mein Horizont nochmal um wunderbare Klangwelten erweitert. Das Set was ich hier zusammengestellt habe beinhaltet sowohl ruhige als auch rhythmische Passagen und es gibt viele verschiedenste ethnische Instrumente und Sounds zu höheren, zum Beispiel:

das Didgeridoo, Klangschalen, Sitar, Tablas und Percussions, Steeldrums und Hang, Mantra- und Obertongesänge, das Bansuri, Sitar etc..
 
Aber auch viele europäische Instrumente, wie:

Piano, Gitarre, Bass, Geige und natürlich auch Keyboards und synthetische Flächen. 

Freut euch also auf einen dynamischen, organischen Mix für eure ganz besondere Zeit.

Dear people
I developed this set for studies of conscious extensions.
Through the C-time, a sad loss of a loved one and the joyful birth of our child last year, I started to grapple with some techniques that are designed to bring consciousness out of my head and back into the body. To which one can "listen" to the wisdom of the body again.

There are many exciting disciplines in this area, for example:
craniosacral self-treatment, bioenergetics, holotropic breathing, meditation, dream yoga and lucid dreaming, hemi-sync, dance in trance, shamanism, sound therapy, the Taoist path, Qi Gong, Jin Shin Jyutsu and of course Tantra, which by its theme: "it is both as well as"  is able to bring all areas under one roof, or to interweave.

In the course of my research, of course, I was also musically inspired and so my horizons expanded again to include wonderful worlds of sound. The set I have put together here contains both calm and rhythmic passages and there are many different ethnic instruments and sounds to higher levels, for example:

the didgeridoo, singing bowls, sitar, tablas and percussions, steel drums and hang, mantra and overtone chants, the bansuri, sitar etc ..

But also many European instruments, such as:

Piano, guitar, bass, violin and of course keyboards and synthetic surfaces.

So look forward to a dynamic, organic mix for your very special time.

Recorded live at the Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali on December 6, 2021, just after the New Moon, Total Solar Eclipse.

This was my farewell set after living and dancing in Bali for over 8 years. The community was in great spirits and the vibes were super high. This was an epic send-off. Thanks to the tribe!
