the sixth and final movement of maurice ravel's "le tombeau de couperin," written in memory of captain joseph de marliave, who died fighting in world war I with the french army. 

this piece was originally written for solo piano but here i have adapted it for four analog synthesizers.

KAFKA’S INSECT (2020)

KAFKA’S INSECT is an interdisciplinary performance based on the novella "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka, published in 1915. The interdisciplinary profile of this production presents a cycle of video-art scenes, accompanied by a live piano score and modular analog synthesizers. The narrative is presented through the sections in the story that portray ‘sound’, such as the prodding of feet as the furniture is shoved out of Gregor’s room by Mrs Samsa and his sister Greta, a medicinal glass vial shattering on the floor, apples tossed at Gregor by Mr Samsa ... etc. Most of the footage is shot with the Daguerreotype Achromat lens which is directly inspired by the world’s first photographic optic lens. The Achromat lens was originally created in France in1838 for the Daguerreotype camera and captures an illuminous soft focus with rich textured backgrounds - rarely achieved with modern lenses.

I once saw a man who was collecting the bones of birds from between the stones.

I thought he must be an ornithologist and I was just about to pass by
when something cought my eye:

The man´s movements were young and nimble,
but the look in his eyes was more than a thousand years old.

„An architect and lover”

I am an architect and a lover. 
But the girl I want to marry won´t have me until I´ve built a city that flies as high as her dreams. I´ve already built her a worldful of cities, some of them with houses rising right up to the clouds. She always accepts the new city, happily licks ice cream on park benches, and walks proudly along the city streets adorned with life, but when I approach her full of hope, she replies „This isn´t it!”

No, there´s nothing wrong with the girl. 
Stones are too heavy. 
And wood burns too easily. 
Swan bones are hollow inside, 
they carry high up into the air 
and hold the living, spirits and dreams together.

No, there´s nothing wrong with the girl. 
This time she will get her city.
