Longform minimal electronic noise offering from Maralie Armstrong-Rial's VALISE project, utilizing the same setup as her/their standout set at the 2023 Summer Scum festival ~

"The sounds herein were produced by durational touch.
ATTINY pins soldered to wire & tied with steel thread & laid across a conductive tabletop. The thread was gently blown before being repeatedly cut with scissors. Additional sounds recorded trackside at 2023 INDY 500."

The cassette release includes a piece of wire used for the recording on a numbered card.

my sister asked if our father was a candidate for hospice care 
Dr said yes
Dr said he’s been ready
Dr’s face grew soft and ashamed, 
but we all know a patient’s natural death is not his failure

we arrived home, 
my father’s shoulders soaked up tears from 
my sister’s and my face 
we held each other 
in a good bye, in a circle, in the present
we’re still embracing
i’m writing crying this     
				 

first visit from home hospice care nurse
he suggests dad continue playing piano
continue with puzzles
keep the brain engaged


that's the last week i heard my father play piano


we're sitting
shoulder-to-shoulder, gazing into the screen
i teach my old man midi
brain lights up
i'm secretly recording as he tickles the keys 
his attention is faint yet expressing more excitement
than one could expect a dying man to muster

smiling
looking at each other
smiling again
listening to our musics, our moments, together

the grave of Leonard Bernstein is located at the tallest natural point of Brooklyn, NY. a small bench etched with his surname is covered in stones left by reverent visitors. small shrubs surround the bench where many small and singing insects find shelter.
a restless dawn led me to this site with a loved one in mind. with only the occasional groundskeeper in sight the morning felt so quiet, so removed from the city and yet the sounds are so full.
low drones from nearby riding lawnmowers
oscillate with aircraft overhead.
a city washes night from it's face with back-up truck alarms and emergency sirens claiming the day.
the crickets teach me rhythms, polyrhythms, and persistence. 
the gravestone teaches me impermanence, patience and listening. 
  
this is a recording from that bench at 8:04am on the morning of September 18, 2019
