Rapper-producer Trie Cartier inhabits the best of both North Carolina’s hip-hop worlds: his cerebral wit is always accentuated with a little bit of bounce. Over soulful, melodic beats, occasionally produced by the artist himself, Trie uses his lyricism as a vessel to have a conversation with his fans. “I’d be doing people a disservice if I didn’t have some type of message, if I wasn’t teaching them with my music,” he says. That message: “Do what makes you happy. Don’t follow the in crowd.”

As an artist, Trie Cartier lives by that mantra. His wordplay and the imagery he creates in his rhymes set him apart. He is the antithesis of mumble rap. But he can still draw a crowd. 

Trie is building on the cult following he earned as one half of Durham, North Carolina’s Wreck-N-Crew, the rap duo he formed with childhood friend Black Poseidon. With the debut of his first solo single, “Rotate,” Trie’s sound and storytelling transcend N.C., connecting with music heads from Brooklyn to Atlanta. 

Often cited as the “producer arm” of the group, Trie Cartier’s double threat of lyricism and production are a reflection of how seriously he takes his craft. It’s no wonder that Wreck-N-Crew has received co-signs from DJ Drama, 9th Wonder, and Vibe magazine. Wreck-N-Crew has also opened for Nipsey Hussle. Trie credits such visionaries as Outkast, Left Eye, and UGK as artists who’ve molded his musical career, and as a result, he has emerged as one of the freshest voices from North Carolina. As a member of Wreck-N-Crew, he is an unabashed hustler in the art of rap. As a solo artist, he’s unstoppable.
