Artist Bio:
German based Shelley established herself since 2019.
She showcases elemental sounds from the realms of Hypnotic, Deep Techno and
Drum’n’Bass. With a varying sound across genres of electronic music, Shelley has
landed gig’s at venues such as Tresor Berlin, Sektor Evolution in Dresden and
played at Florian Meindl’s Flash Lab.
Shelley has been featured in mix series from Crescent London, Revelation Of
Sound, Diffuse Reality and more.

Ouissam told me that I would be closing the garden, Saturday night at Equation back in December. It’s a slot I’m very familiar with because I’ve been fortunate enough to attend every previous edition of both Equation and (Re)Treat, and it is normally the emotional peak of my weekend, and I believe it’s the same for many others too. So, obviously I was very excited about the opportunity but also felt a big sense of responsibility to deliver that experience for those people at such an important part of the festival.
 For the past couple years I’ve been focusing on performing live, but as this was to be a DJ set I made a decision that I was going to try to produce as many tracks as I could during the lead up to the festival. I felt this would be the best thing I could do for myself and the crowd. I often get caught up with ‘imposter syndrome’ thoughts when being featured alongside such high level artists, so I wanted to make sure I justified my place in the lineup. My idea was that by playing as much new & original material as I could, I would be providing a fresh and unique experience for the audience that couldn’t be replicated.

As for myself, playing my own music always feels like a more authentic expression as an artist, and I knew that putting this extra pressure on myself would force me to grow. I was already so grateful for the opportunity, that I didn’t want to have any regrets looking back feeling like I could have done more with it. So since December, I effectively became a hermit. Spending all my spare time locked away in my studio, either expanding sections from my live shows or building new tracks from scratch. I wanted to make a broad spectrum of sounds and energy levels so that whatever the situation I would hopefully have something to play.   So after months of prolonged dedication, I had built up a huge amount of pressure, putting all that work into just this one night. Luckily Sisi & Malika who played before me did an amazing job of building such a good atmosphere that by the time it was my turn to play I was just enjoying the music and excited to start.

At the beginning I was definitely nervous, I’m really not used to playing on a larger stage like that, so it took some time to settle in, but from the start I could see that people were already starting to connect to what I was doing. It’s always a bit scary to play something new out for the first time, because it’s easy to convince yourself at home that something is good but it's a different story to play it for other people. So for most of the set, I was in an emotional ping-pong match between the fear & anxiety of loading up a new track and immense joy & relief once I could feel a positive response from everyone. I remember a specific moment at almost the halfway point, when I realised that everyone I could see was fully locked-in and onboard with me, so after that I dropped the weight off myself and began to really enjoy everything. From that point on, it’s cheesy to say but, it was really like a ‘dream come true’.

Once I saw that everyone was into it I felt more confident to keep playing more of my own tracks, I had a goal to play around 50% original stuff, but by then it was 85% my music. The response was really crazy and more than I could have hoped for. There were certain tracks that I was more anxious to play because I thought they might be too ‘different’ than what I normally hear, but those were actually the moments that consistently got the best reaction for everyone, which was such an affirming experience for me. I think after that, going forward I feel much more confident to lean into those ‘different’ ideas.  The final 15-20 minutes was a bit of a blur for me because I started to get a bit emotionally overwhelmed by everyone. I had tears in my eyes and my face was hurting from smiling too much. I've never been on the receiving end of such a big outpouring of love.
