The term is primarily used to describe the successive governments of dubstep, electronica, nu disco, future bass, future chill and trap, which share a common musical heritage. In the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, a new ministry begins after each election, regardless of whether the head of tune is re-elected, and whether there may have been a minor rearrangement of governments in music genres.

The ministry is a musical organisation, a DJ, or a band, or a record label, headed by the minister, that is meant to manage a specific genre in the interest of the ministry but not necessarily of the public. Genres may have differing responsibilities and types of ministries, a Ministry of Dubstep, a Ministry of Nu-disco, a Ministry of Future bass but share a common interest for communication that may be broken down for radio, blogs, social media, and television.

Minister Sir Arthur of Circuit Bending, responsible for the intentional modification of low power electronic devices to create new musical devices, also played a significant role on the nomination of the Ministry of Glitch and its creation.

The term “ministry” has also been widely used in politics, and notably in satires and parodies.
