Amon Tobin's one of my favorite artist and main inspiration in composition, that's why it seems nice for me to make this kind of tribute.

Stone Giants - Metropole (Cyberlife's Cub' Remix)

Supremely dark side selection by Karl O'Connor featuring exclusives from Regis and Mønic plus a dozen bullets from Pessimist, Overlook, Ipman, Killawatt, and more, documenting a very specific moment in the mid-late 10’s where a bunch of renegades from D&B, techno, and bass music lurched into a no-mans-land of industrial techno, moody electronics, autonomic D&B, half-step, and noisy bass experiments. 

Now almost 20 years into its thing, osiris was established in 2006 by Simon Shreeve as a sort of dubwise cousin to Downwards’ more industrial predilections. Long intertwined with Regis through his label but also their collaborative work as Cub, Shreeve’s eye toward the hardcore continuum bleeds heavy into pretty much all the apocalyptic grot on show, veering from abstract noise textures to fully sunken, bombed-out acid bass and peak-time rollers.

We start around 2013 with a pair of missiles from Ipman and Killawatt, the former punctuating pile-driving snares and snarling synths, the latter somehow sounding like a classic Burial woodblock intro turned full moody, red-lining wobbler. M​ø​nic’s ‘Blink’ explores the elastic binds between dubstep and industrial/dub techno on a throbbing slow roller, while Dot Product treads into the sort of post-apocalyptic sci-fi territory claimed by the likes of Roly Porter. 

Pessimist’s ‘Pagans’ more or less steals the show, going at it with churning subs and strafing hi-hats, while Overlook’s scowling 170bpm D&B madness ‘Former Self’ is just pure aggy brilliance. The previously unreleased ‘Skin Of The Sea’ from Simon Shreeve & Regis finishes things off with something like industrial slowcore, taking a sort of autonomic template and slowing it down 1000% into a growling crawler full of spacious stabs and scattered snares, deep in the echo chamber.

Radio Limbo ~ "Blood sweat and tears" - Sept. '23

For fans of the music that we promote Roel Funcken probably needs little introduction. A legend in his own right with releases dating back more than 23 years on labels such as n5MD, Ad Noiseam, Schematic, Analogical Force and his own imprints. Roel was also the organiser of the Mindcamp events in The Netherlands that featured the best IDM artists and is one of our biggest heroes and a true inspiration. Did you know Roel also makes beautiful paintings? The artwork for this mix is one example, but we urge you to check out his other works.

Fresh from a series of artist-led 12"s, Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label returns with 'Dark Matter', its first compilation since 2017's 'Cosmology Selections'. Collected in a triple vinyl LP / digital formats, the release offers a fresh snapshot of the exciting possibilities and experiments happening at the intersection of hip-hop, jungle and bass music; a hybrid sound the label has pioneered since its first release eight years ago. 

Across 14 tracks, 'Dark Matter' showcases Cosmic Bridge's growing global roster of artists: Moresounds, Danny Scrilla, Proc Fiskal, Margari's Kid, Oliver Yorke, J:Kenzo, TMSV, vromm, alongside new faces Samba and Rude Operator, and perennial favorites Es.tereo, Synkro and Djrum, the latter two in collaboration with label head Om Unit. 

Stylistically the compilation covers a broad range, and gives listeners the space to digest it all with a running time of 75 minutes. There are stripped-down, meditative rollers such as TMSV's flute-led 'Ominous', the bass hypnosis of Danny Scrilla's 'Sacred Waters', and Samba's snappy, booming remix of Om Unit's 'The Lake'. The timeless energy of jungle is channeled in Proc Fiskal's 'Death', a percussive, bouncy number, while Moresounds plays with filters (and your mind) as he refines a less-is-more take of classic themes on 'Watating'. J:Kenzo highlights the music's Jamaican roots on 'Dub For Bashenga'; a tough, pounding cut that goes straight for the chest and which finds its counterpoint in Rude Operator's 'Broken Sky'. 

For those who like more expansive, cinematic approaches there are epic waves of drums, slick editing and euphoria in Es.tereo's 'Floating Point' and Vromm's 'Decentralized', while Oliver Yorke's 'Treasured' and Margari's Kid's 'Challenger' squeeze soul from colder sound palettes and tight breakbeats. 

Om Unit's two collaborations, 'Reflections' with Synkro and 'Ruins' with Djrum, reflect the compilation's ambitions and breadth. The former is a delicate, uplifting roller that sets you up for the dark rumblings, freeform stylings and frenetic rhythms of the latter. The compilation ends with a track that arguably stands tall on its own, Crypticz's 'Chrysalis' feat. Amy Kisnorbo; an 11-minute epic that plays out like a love letter to the magic of breakbeat science, dub technology and human creativity. 

Dark Matter is a finely crafted statement of intent from Cosmic Bridge and Om Unit, shunning easy self-congratulation for a dive into the musical potentials and connections of a sound that is now an established part of the global bass music vocabulary.
