"Thank you to Atmoteka for inviting me to contribute to the series. I haven't put together a 100% focused DnB mix before, so it was a fun undertaking. There are plenty more knowledgeable people than me in the DnB genre (many of you listeners no doubt), so I didn't try to overthink the tracks that went into it too much - whether they were underground, brand new, well-known, classics or not. Instead, I picked tracks that I love through and through for many different reasons, and did my best to work them into a narrative. It became more of a "mixtape" in style with chapters, ups and downs, layering, and a few small loops or edits."

Injazero is a forward-thinking boutique label straddling Instanbul and London via the impeccable mind of Siné Buyuka. And I’m not just saying that because she also released my album. The diverse and boundary-pushing output of the imprint includes music by Matt Emery, C. Diab, Heinali, KMRU, Hinako Omori, and most recently a collaboration between Tegh & Adel Poursamadi. So I’m always tuned into what Injazero is up to. And this time, I am more than pleased with their latest! Halina Rice is a London-based electronic musician and AV artist, with a debut, titled REDUX released back in 2017. It may have just slipped passed my ears, but it only takes one listen for them to prick up! This is modern electronic music at its finest. Deep rolling bass, sharp synthy stabs, and incredible atmospherics make up this cinematic journey into a mind expressed through ELISION – a fusion of the abstract and real worlds, combining synthetic with organic in music, art, and technology. “The idea is to evoke places that don’t exist – like a surreal parallel world,” says Rice about her sophomore release. “Fracture” is one of my favourite pieces, which is why I selected to premiere it for you here today – it encompasses the fragmentation of reality through jittery and elastic elements, which seem to come in like waves, to unsettle and heal. Further on the album, Rice explores sound through a range of styles, anywhere from experimental IDM to dancefloor hitters, with a nod to artists such as Rival Consoles, Max Cooper, and Jon Hopkins. And if any of these names tickle your fancy, you’ll be in love with Halina Rice.

The other day I watched a video of a pianist signed to a major record label performing his latest magnum opus. It was so bad. I hate to talk smack on the platform which I have purposely devoted to the absolute positive expansion of the music. But there was just something about that particular performance that really turned me off. Was it the formulaic basic chord progression? Was it the senseless pounding on helpless piano keys? Or was it simply a lack of all emotion, in which the execution of this piece seemed to exist? I was a bit dismayed [to say the least], and so I actually sat down and then composed a piano piece myself. I guess it was a sort of insurrection against the mass-produced, the stamped and truly tepid. I guess I simply wanted to make sure that feelings still may be conveyed. So it's no wonder that this morning I turn over to one of my favourite independent labels and their latest upcoming release from Tom Adams to premiere his beautiful and tender track. At just a bit over two minutes in length, the deceptively simple notes gently fall upon these spent and tired ears, and suddenly I am cradled in the warmth of intimate and sensitive sounds, and suddenly I hear the emotion and the soul. It's not the instrument, the chords, and not the melody. It's not the colours, not the flavours, not the words. It's how these all transmit from one towards another. It's how the message is conveyed and then received. And if it fails to carry all that must be mentioned, then maybe it's not worth in saying it at all. But in the case of Adams' morning afterglow of sounds, I'm glad he shared it with Moderna and with me.

"Golden waves is an album about experiential flow, and the many forms in which it can be enjoyed. In the winter of 2021 a series of heavy storms hit the south west of England, in their wake came lines of swell that broke upon the coastline of Cornwall in a joyful rhythm. During that time I went out each day searching for waves with my surfboard. As the sun set the light would often reflect golden across the water and the lines of arriving swell. After the surf, and with visions of those golden waves still playing in my mind I recorded a series of late night piano improvisations. This album is a collection of my favourite moments from these sessions." - Tom Adams

This Should Do It

SoCal-based composer Enrico Benjamin creates what he likes to call living room electronica; lofi beats merge with dub-infused bass lines and experimental synths to create abstract, downtempo soundscapes. cycle60’s music has been featured in commercials, podcasts and an indie movie soundtrack. 

Born and raised in Chicago, Benjamin was heavily influenced by the sound of 80s house parties, and the playlists of college radio which introduced him to the world of dub reggae.

After graduating with a degree in sound engineering from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Benjamin returned to Chicago and spent several years in the studio recording others before releasing his debut vinyl EP, Bitstream Fixations Vol. 1, on Binary Records in 1995.  A handful of cassette-only EPs were released in and around the Chicago area in support of live performances through the early 2000s.
