Advent day #18 has rolled around and for this one, here's a mix from myself. Even though I've blogged a couple of my mixes before it still feels awkward biggin' up myself, so I'm not going too. What I will happily big up though is the music that's in this mix that was recorded live at a friends private festival not too far from where I live that sits in a perfect location and is attended by some real sound folks that don't mind me turning up and playing them some tunes to dance to. In my mix you'll find some of my very favourite tunes out of my personnel collection. It kicks off with some Funky Breaks and builds up tempo as it goes which leads on to some heavier Breakbeat action around the halfway point and through to the end. Hope you enjoy the music and from me to you all, have a very happy Christmas.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hello, my name is Will aka Skinshape, I do old school sounding psychedelic-funky-souly-stoner-rock music... Or something like that. I'm working on my fourth album now. I also run a label called Horus Records, we do exclusively roots reggae. I'm also a record trader and collector. Living in London provides a lot of opportunities for record digging. I've been collecting for about 8 years... First reggae mostly, then moving into soul and funk, and now I'm more into African music.


2. 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

The 7" for some reason is a near-mythical thing. I don't know quite what it is about it... But something grabs me a lot more than an LP does. 7" Just feels like the coolest format, and I love the artwork on 7" records. If you're into certain genres, especially reggae, the 7" is really the only way to go! 


3. One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I've pulled out my favourite 7" singles, but then realised there are still way too many. I've worked it down to records that I can't really let go of, or that I'm just really into at the moment! It starts in the USA, then hops across the Atlantic to Africa (West to East), then hops back across to the Caribbean for a final blast of a few of my favourite reggae singles.

Afrique 2000

During recent DJ sets I've been playing a number of quality re-rubs of classic tracks by expert editors such as Smoove, The Reflex, Suonho, Mr Bird, Monetrik and Dimitri (from Paris or should that be Stoke-on-Trent?) plus a few of my own, so I thought I'd try and compile some of the best I've found onto a mix CD. 

So here's 21 edits over 80 minutes of some of the finest records ever made (in my humble opinion) re-worked for the dance floor from the likes of Aretha Franklin,  Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles, Ben E KIng, Amy Winehouse, Glen Miller, Marcia Griffiths, The Marvelettes, Joe Cuba and there's even a Kylie cover too plus all the usual Daytoner bases of Rocksteady, Hip-Hop, Funk, Latin, Soul, Swing have all been covered on the journey from 90-130bpm. 

I was asked to make this mix for a friend who was in dire need of some ear fodder on his regular journey from the far west of Cornwall to his 'up country' work and my brother-in-law even intends to use it as free gift for his Cornish V-Dub Camper Van hire business!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these re-works (and please look up the producers and support their sterling efforts) and I'll hopefully be bringing some more of these sets out live to a venue near you soon.
