Otto Lindholm is a Brussels-based drone artist who performs live with a frankly astounding collection of analog gear, loop stations and a huge double bass. His self-titled debut album was released last month on Icarus Records. Three tracks long - each lasting somewhere between 8 and 17 minutes - and all three pieces were played and recorded in one shot.

The release represents a complete rethink about what it means to compile and commission music in the streaming era – and the tracks and seductively dark atmospheres conjured as a result are exploring all kinds of new sonic territory, too. In short, the cream of leftfield electronic talent have been given a brief: to take the phrase “in Death's dream kingdom”, or the whole of T.S. Eliot's poem The Hollow Men from which it comes, as inspiration.

The resulting 25 tracks will be released, day by day, together with further artist information, to build into the full work. Not an album in the traditional sense, certainly more than just a playlist, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the 90s – Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis – but there are no throwbacks here: this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times.

"The eye was in the tomb and looked at Cain.' This, Victor Hugo's verse from ‘La conscience’, was at the origin of this track​ while​ I was working on new themes, in this instance tragedy. Cain’s fratricide and his wandering retribution proved to be quite fertile ground for me. Discovering 'The Hollow Men', the strong correlation between my searching and the poem instantly petrified me. Based originally on an underlining slow, long, repetitive movement, added to the reading of the poem, the track found both its form and finality: a modern infertility dance-​being​ ​looking ​for redemption." ~ @ottolindholm

~ Four passes with the giant ~

Otto Lindholm used a technique that was developed by the Italian bass player and composer Stefano Scodanibbio. This technique consists in playing the different overtones of each string with two hands simultaneously thanks to the thumbs.

An all new collaborative release by two exciting Belgian artists:

"The first time we collaborated as a duo was for our interpretation of The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars at les Ateliers Claus. At that time, there was an audience surrounding us. Now secluded and on our own, we went back to the same venue and locked ourself for 2 days arranging and recording the music Ben Bertrand wrote while he was in confinement.

We designed a dense and mineral triptych. Digging into this music, we experienced the current and pressure of the passing time. At some point we saw light coming in. The transformation has already been done, reversion to fundamentals is now our single option." - Ben Bertrand & Otto Lindholm

Ben Bertrand
Ben Bertrand is a Belgian Bass Clarinetist and composer. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates his live with a hypnotic web of sounds. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching a slow motion of our crazy life sailing by. With his former works (Era/Area, Off-Record 2017 and NGC 1999, les albums Claus 2018), Ben toured in Belgium, France and Netherlands (Meakusma Festival, Ancienne Belgique, Le Lieu Unique, Schiev Festival, Le Guess Who?, World Minimal Music Festival). His last album, Manes, has been released in March 2020 in collaboration with Stroom and les albums claus.

Brussels-based composer evolving in drone music and modern classical, Otto Lindholm employs an array of loop pedals and electronic effects in partnership with his double bass to produce a range of rich and voluptuous tones, emotions, and elongated melodies.
