As I turn 50, I reflect on a life shaped by war, oppression, loss, and resilience. This song is my story—one that cannot be fully told in just four minutes, but one where the most defining moments remain.

I was born in Iran before the revolution, but everything changed when the Islamic Republic took power. Suddenly, even a child’s words could mean life or death. In school, we had to lie. We had to pretend. Anything we said that violated the regime’s strict Islamic code could lead to the arrest, imprisonment, or even execution of our parents. Imagine that burden on a child’s shoulders.

I lived through the Iran-Iraq War, through nights filled with the sound of Saddam’s bombs falling around us. I watched as my father was abducted by the IRGC—not once, but twice. I saw their boots kick in our door, tearing through our home, searching for anything they could use against him.

And so, I did what no child should ever have to do. I burned my father’s poems. I poured his whisky down the sink, knowing that even the scent of alcohol could be a death sentence. To mask the smell, I sprayed the house with PifPaf insect spray. I ran for blocks through the freezing snow, carrying our video player and American movies—anything that could be seen as ‘Western corruption.’ I didn't even realize I had left the house barefoot. By the time I returned, my feet were numb to the bone. But I had made it in time.

When my father was finally released, we fled. From Iran to Vienna, to Yugoslavia, to East Berlin, and finally to Denmark in 1985. A new country. A new language. A new fight for survival. I started school without knowing a word of Danish. Years later, I started a business, built a life, met my wife, and raised three wonderful children.

In 2008, I lost everything. Bankruptcy wiped out all I had built. But I refused to be broken. In 2009, I started again. And here I am, 50 years old, still standing.

This song is for every hardship, every loss, every moment that could have shattered me—but didn’t. It is for the road I’ve walked, barefoot in the snow and far beyond.

I am still here. I am still standing. Unbroken.
