I had nearly forgotten about this “song.” It’s content was written sometime between 1999-2001, recorded, and “released” on the “Every Time Just Like the Last” album in 2001. When I recently found it and listened I couldn’t stop and I’ve listened to it a lot lately. I remembered a lot from that time period 15 years ago: all the circumstances, writing, coordination, permissions I needed to get from friends to sample their music, working with Ben Chase and convincing him to sing, etc. that it entailed.

OK...  So... Yeah... I’m not really sure what this is but it is an epic piece of disjointed fragments that all kind of make sense together that I love. It is one of the most favorite things that I’ve ever created. It contains samples from Zorath (Matt, Bob, Clint), The Portables (Jim Diotte, Ben Chase), … not sure if there was some Freedom Force (Craig Burns) sampling in this but it’s very possible. Those of you who know intimately about my journey, especially recently, can read into some of the lyrics. There’s some talk from some of my shadow selves. At the end I’m definitely whispering to myself “don’t wake up” which fascinates me that I’m saying that as I’m currently experiencing a great awakening.

DreamSequence

This story is a kind of winding drunken bassline driven journey of what it felt like in the depths of my alcoholism at over 330 pounds, insane, and out of control in October/November of 2015. My liver was failing and my body was rejecting my lifestyle, starting to fill up with fluid. Over Thanksgiving weekend I woke up unable to catch my breath because the fluid started to seep into my lungs. I thoroughly tried to drink myself to death that weekend and almost succeeded but something intervened and I called 911 instead. My journey of recovery commenced from there. Since then I have lost over 140 pounds, gotten sober, am in the midst of spiritual awakening, beaten sleep apnea, beaten Type II diabetes, beaten high blood pressure, and have been taken off any and all prescription medications I was on my entire adult life. I have a new enthusiasm and respect for life that I never had before. If I had not travelled the road of excess that I did I would never have gotten to this point. I can truly say today that I no longer regret nor dwell on the past nor do I dread or worry about the future – that only served to paralyze me from taking action in the Now. Today it is about enjoying moments, both good and bad. I have realized that the bad moments and things that have occurred are often the things that promote the greatest growth and offer the greatest gifts.
This song started out as a “let’s see what happens” collaboration between Dennis and I. We’ve been talking a lot lately early in the morning and it kind of developed from a “we should try to work on something” to Dennis saying “hey – try to do something with Roxy Music Remake/Remodel” all the way through a month or two of putting together rough cuts of a beat, getting together with Dennis, recording harmonica, cutting it up, working on intro and outro options, tweaks, distortion on the harmonica, etc.

Could Not Find A Way

I recently went on a trip to Provincetown to recharge – I have been doing a lot and have accomplished a lot this year between losing 140+ lbs, getting sober, reconnecting with my career and work ethic, reconnecting with music/art/creative endeavors, my new work out regimen, helping others, etc. In doing so I find it so easy to get caught up in those feelings of not doing enough or not being good enough again and I needed this trip to break that cycle. On this trip, Rob Six of the Provincetown Juice Bar, suggested I go to Snail Road and start a hike through the dunes to a quiet beach with bluffs. I left his juice bar around 9am, walked down to Snail Road, and started the hike. Since it was off season there was no one to be seen. It was quiet, peaceful, and serene. Once I got to the beach and saw no footprints or anyone around I went for a beach run. I found myself a bit of a ways up the beach and decided to keep walking until I got … somewhere I guess. I eventually found myself at Race Point following others footsteps to get back to the road. When I got back to the MastHead (where I was staying) it was 2pm! This hike seemed to last only a few minutes and a peaceful eternity simultaneously. I got lost in time and the moment and later found I had written a number of poems and this song. I found a beat I made about 14 years ago that I thought would fit and recorded it that night.

I vaguely remember making these songs but am, to this day, still in love with them both! Steve Vallot also makes an appearance on this track. This track is from early 2000 or 2001 and was included on the Pyramids of Giza debut album. POG was a strange indie rock indie lo-fi hip hop word and experimental music project. I recorded a number of my old poems to the music. Some of this work has now been web published to my From Then to Now blog, exploring all this work I made.

Moonglow or Woman Shaped

This is the first track I wrote and recorded for the new Me and My Pet Battlecat album. This is a song that attempts to portray the strange state of mind that embodied my alcoholism. There is a dual malady of self loathing and egomania that set in for me.

This is a draft of the track. The official release may be rerecorded but there was something pure about this track which makes me want to release it. I also want to get feedback on what people think about this.

Me and My Pet Battlecat started in 1994 in the basement of Jim Diotte. He and I made some experimental music with his drum set, various instruments, lyrics, and a four track recorder. Truthfully, I can not recall what that music sounded like and wish I still had the tape. Me and My Pet Battlecat reunited in 2016 to begin work on what was originally called "Still A Menace to Sobriety", which became the name of this song just now.

Still A Menace To Sobriety

I am a lifelong lover of music of many kinds. In high school I experimented with creating some music. That group/project was called "Me and My Pet Battlecat" with my friend Jim Diotte. From there I moved on to making some early hip hop music with my friend Ryan Santos. Somewhere along the way someone started calling me D. Boogie and that name has stuck although I've never really cared for it. I learned how to sample and cut things, record, etc. and created works in many bands and projects. With my friend Ben Chase we collaborated on a hip hop/spoken word/indie rock group called "Pyramids of Giza". Another project was my computer experimental rap album as my alter ego D. Tech. Unbeknownst to me at the time there was another Tiverton native, Jett RAncourt, who went by Ra the Sun God. Our mutual friend, King Friday (Ryan Santos), told me about him and said I should meet him. When we did our insanity collided and our group 100 Proof was born. We released 4 albums, of which I still feel "Binge" is a classic. Our music was riddled with Ancient Egypt references, aliens, and fueled by our love of partying and booze. Our friend, Ryan James DeCosta aka Jack Dempsey, joined us on some tracks and for many shows over the years as well. Eventually, as alcohol took too much of my life, music and many other things faded.

In this new life I'm building, on a mission to get fit spiritually, mentally, and physically, my art and music has started to come back. This is where I'm going to post it.
