Painful Reminder was born from my natural urge to make "one of those" - a mid-2000s Tearout Amen epic with vocals. A niche subgenre i've very much been into for years and years now. I started that track using some sort of generic acapella, but knew I'd approach Vlada about doing vocals, and she happily agreed. I've known and talked to Vlada for years and since we worked together on "My Only Night Alive" in 2014 or so, we always wanted to do more stuff but somehow never got around to it until this tune came around. She visited me last year and recorded a demo version of this in my room with a first draft of lyrics she had written for it and i immediately loved it. With the final vocal tracks especially i feel like she makes that song basically entirely on her own.
Production wise, i spent the most amount of time iterating through different amens and trying to get them to sound "just right". Of course as it often goes i never managed to hit that sweet spot I was aiming for but i think the end result is at the very least good enough. The final amen in this tune is a weird frankenstein hybrid of 3 different breaks with a ton of back and forth processing. I couldn't recount the chain from memory if you held a gun to my head. A stupid amount of work went into that break and i am glad i don't have to think about it anymore from now on.

Painful Reminder EP

GADE SYSTEM - PAINFUL REMINDER (FEAT VESNÁ) (JSD027) OUT NOW!!!

I made the majority of Vertigo in a week. Definitely the worst week of this entire year for me, which almost definitely had a huge impact on how the track sounded. I was experimenting with sine harmonics for that lead synth and i made quite a mournful little arp melody and then built the entire track around that. I have a strong dislike for simple ABAB structures in tunes (most of the time), so my compulsion was to just let it end in a drawn out, epic pad section. So yea that's why that is in there.
I don't really tend to put any personal meaning into songs so i can't really write something cool along the lines of:
"It's an evening in autumn. Your standing at a train station and it's time to move on. You're scared of letting go but you have to move on. This is the soundtrack for that."
That sounds cool and all but it's just not what it is. I ended up with a sad melody and because i was sad i made a sad track. Then i needed some ambience and found a field recording of a train station so I layered that over the end. That's it. Sorry for that peek behind the curtain.
What i can say though is that this track deserves a big thanks to Wally Coman Dante who graciously provided me with some amazing reese basses, one of which is the basis for the bassline in this song. Absolute legend.

Flip over for a metallic stepping lash out, ‘Detour’, with holes punched through the omnipresent fog by staccato bursts of jazz stabs penetrating the Jungle canopy from above.
