One of the bright talent emerging from the current Netherlands‘ electronic underground scene is the German and Amsterdam-based, ‘fetish-inclined’, vocalist and performer Sophie du Palais ((Pinkman, Dekmantel Recordings)) also known as “Vrouwe Fataal”. Across six tracks, Du Palais unravels a potent signature, driven by fierce, imperious Anglo-Germanic vocals and eclectic, dissonant sounds. Connecting techno, EBM, acid and electro with vestiges of dub and experimental electronics, on ‘Endurance of Pain…’ Du Palais conjures an abrasive, intoxicating depiction of lust, hedonism, technological obsession and millennial alienation.

With the cruising techno pop menace of ‘Slow Steady Cum’, Du Palais introduces a nocturnal underworld. The descent is intensified by the mania and murk of ‘Glazed Disco Ball’ – a suspenseful dose of guttural low end, scowling spoken words, and crude drum machine clatter; if Gudrun Gut fronted Suicide. Then ‘Boys Tears’ elaborates on the dread and the sleaze with a horror show of gurgling synthesis, drubbing percussion and dissolute enunciations, halfway between John Carpenter and Unit Moebius.

From there ‘Up To No Good’ brings proceedings into a severe form of heat and frenzy, outlaying an exchange of raw jackhammer rhythms and vociferous punk chants that recalls Liaisons Dangereuses’ timeless underground classic ‘Los Niños del Parque’ if remade for 2021. ‘Smash The Mirror’ then finds room for scintillating dub recurrence and freakish machine funk before Sophie concludes the set with the sardonic electro-clash anthemics of ‘2001’, a provocative exploration of self, communication, and compulsion in the digital era. Miss Kittin meets Dopplereffekt for a technoid bonfire of the vanities.

‘Endurance of Pain…’ finds Sophie Du Palais seizing an uncompromising sense of style and intensity, an emergent new artist navigating a merciless, pleasure-seeking existence, from club to bedroom to screen, facing it all down with a cold glare, ready to light the fuse.

Duo Lucas Brell and Marvin Uhde deliver six fire-powered percussion tracks to Osàre! Editions. Longtime friends and collaborators, the pair channel a liquid medley of drum menace that flips sideways, swiftly pivoting between 85 and 170 bpm. As disorientating as it is formidable, “Purest State Confusion” offers up a fractal prism of ever-shifting beat patterns – an endlessly warping vortex, where the continuum of jungle and drum and bass fuses with a guttural, tribalist sound.

The titular number, a wormhole techno ordeal, builds steadily, layer upon layer. A crystalline dancefloor pleaser, it subverts classic four-to-the-floor with a delayed kick drum that punctuates every 8th beat. Like black oil diffusing in water, the bass creeps in menacingly to 'The Disappearer', in hard and fast contrast with the sharp fluctuations of the amen break. 

Slamming in mercilessly, 'Channelling Bryn Jones' opens up the B-side, its fluttering rhythms joining together with an infectious klaxon melody before the IDM-stylings of ‘Brain Massage' closes out. Purest State of Confusion was recorded at various locations in Leipzig and Berlin, including at the shed-turned-studio, owned by the bass-focused record label Fast Castle. 

Final touches and mixing assistance were performed by Mike Bierbach AKA rødhåd at the WSNWG studios. The pioneering techno producer inflects the record with his staunch taste for aerobic club rhythmics, teasing out the whirling tempos and pointillistic harmonics.

Cititrax is proud to present a four song debut solo EP by the Hacker’s new project called Amato. Influenced by early EBM, German techno and new wave, Michel Amato aka The Hacker began producing tracks under his new moniker Amato in 2014. The first one to be released, called Physique, came out in 2015 on the Cititrax Tracks Volume One EP and was a dancefloor success. On this forthcoming EP, entitled “Le Desordre et La Nuit”, Amato integrates his love of the new wave to form four ebm tinged techno funk hits. Very dancefloor friendly, these tracks take pop elements reminiscent of Belgian body music and bring them to the present day. Amato shines as a producer here, as he has so many times before. It’s an absolute honor for us to release this debut project. Artwork is sourced from photographs taken in NYC in the 1980s with layout by Veronica Vasicka. The release is limited to 999 copies pressed on 160 gram silver vinyl, and accompanied by jackets printed on matte heavyweight cardstock. Release date: July 13, 2016.
