So this is the first in my series of 'Tracks from the smelly cellar' where I'll be giving away a load of edits/bootlegs/mash up/tracks I'd put together for my DJ sets & haven't seen the light of day yet.

This is a edit I put together of Tori Amos's 'Professional Window'. I actually edited a great nu disco bootleg that was made Social Disco Club & added extra beats, vocals, edits & bass. I wouldn't normally give away an edit of an edit but i think this one is different enough from both the original & their bootleg to warrant it. It's also had great reactions when I've played it out so thought I'd share the love!

For the 2nd part of my D-Funk 25 mix series I’ve focused on the best, most important or my favourite tracks I’ve made or had a hand in making. Some are originals. Some remixes. Some are edits, bootys or whatever we’re calling them nowadays. It’s a real mix from across the years including my 1st release ‘Transitions’ on Barry Ashworth & Carl Loben’s Westway Records. Right up to my latest, a free download that will drop shortly after the mix goes live. It’s a mix of varying genres. For ages I’ve been known as ‘Europe D-Funk’ that plays funky breaks but, as you’ll see from this mix, my funk focused music covered all styles from hip hop to house, disco to breaks & electro. But don’t worry, I’ve included some of the mid-tempo music that got me really known on an international scale, how could I not! 

Some of the music on this mix has been released on my own labels Upstart Music, the breaks based label I started in 2008 & Grits N Gravy, the funk based label I started with Philly Blunt in 2010. There are also tunes on labels such as Sunday Best, ‘I’m In Love’ the 1st of my 3 remixes I’ve done for the Dub Pistols. The often overlooked, but I think my best mid-tempo tune ‘Bigger Than Baseline’ on Adapted Records. I’ve closed the mix with a recent, original hip hop song ‘Cruise Control’ that my longtime studio partner & good friend Mr Doris. There’s also music from the great series That’s Not An Edit, a track from the now deceased Rump Shakers Records & a rare release from Cakes at The World Bar, a Sydney institution that I was resident at for 8 years. 

I started making music seriously in 2006 when I met & formed a friendship with Barry Ashworth from the band Dub Pistols. He both inspired & guided me to my first few releases. I’m ever grateful for his words of encouragement & enthusiasm. From starting on a knock off copy of Reason on an old PC in the corner of the spare bedroom to now having a fully working dedicated studio, I can honestly say it’s been a wild ride of ups & downs. I guess music mirrors life that way. Even though I started producing & releasing music a while after I started DJing in 1995 on belt drive decks in my bedroom in Wiltshire (UK), I’ve now gone on to release over 200 tracks on over 30 different labels. It's been a little bit since my last freebie (https://soundcloud.com/d-funk/heard-it-through-the-bassline-free-download) which got a really great reaction! This ones on a more nu disco vibe but still with cool synths/bass lines. When this tune first came out in 2005 I was lucky enough to get the vinyl on promo. I played it so much! I picked up the remix stems a while back & when the new DnB version came out it spurred me on to do my own version that would fit into my sets.

A little while ago I gave away my nu disco version of Big City Life which is one of my favourite recent freebies. 'My Nikes' *Free Download*

My Free Downloads Mix. 

Over the years I’ve given away lots & lots of free tune downloads. I think it’s prob about 100 in total! It dawned on me one day that it would be pretty cool to put together a mix featuring a load of my favourites from over the years. From my first ever freebie, the re-edit of The Prodigy ‘Narayan’ from back in 2008 which was a bit of a killer, dance floor filling, secret weapon in the Break da House days. To the latest, a great new version of the iconic Bruce Hornsby tune ‘The Way It Is’ that I used to listen to on cassette over & over again when I was a little kid back in the 80's. There’s a bunch of other great ones that didn’t make the mix like my whole Ghetto Funk EP from 2013, my NWA ‘Straight Outa Compton’ remix that’s one of my most ever played on Soundcloud & loads from the That’s Not An Edit series that I’ve done 13 freebies for now.

My Free Downloads Mix

This is my rave tape! A retrospective look into my UK rave culture roots.

I remember vividly when I heard my first ever rave tape. It was 1992 & my friend gave me the cassette to play in my walkman after school. When I put it on my whole world changed. I'd never heard anything like it before & instantly was hooked. That tape was DJ Seduction & Jumping Jack Frost at Perception Wonderland July '92. It's still one of my favourites.

My school friends & I used to collect all the rave tape packs when they came out, getting the bus to Swindon & going to the 'rave shop' as we called it. At this time we weren't old enough to go to the actual parties. Our favourites were from the Universe parties which were happening quite closer to where I grew up in Wiltshire. We had others from Dreamscape, Fantasia, Obsession, Amnesia House & Helter Skelter. The walls of my bedroom were covered in rave flyer. I’d often drift off to sleep & dream about going to some of them. 

When I got a bit older, but probably not old enough, I was able to go to the parties myself. I used to regularly go to Devotion at Golddiggers, Fusion in Bath, The Brunel Rooms where D.I.Y hosted a room, Helter Skelter at The Sanctuary, United Dance, Slammin' Vinyl & free parties like Spiral Tribe. These were some of the best days & had a huge influence on my musical taste & style. I'd always say to myself 'one day that will be me on the decks up there'.

My first ever gig was at a club called The Depot in Bristol which hosted a night called Death Row Techno. At the time I was playing what we'd now call jungle techno. It was a little before UK rave music split into happy hardcore & jungle/DnB. The night I played was a rave (I can’t remember the name of the event) that had Bristol’s own jungle legend Ronnie Size & one of the scenes best hardcore DJs Brisk playing. So you could say that rave is in my blood.

For years I've been saying I'm going to make my own rave tape. A collection of all the tunes that, when I hear them, I can recall exactly where I was, who I was with & where we were in the crowd. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I really like the remix & Kylie's vocal are amazing (as you'd expect). I can’t quite believe it been a decade since it came out! Recently Triple J challenged producers to complete an unfinished Flume track, offering a blank canvas for any style. Hearing Flume's raw, heavy bass stems, I immediately gravitated towards a UK bass and grime direction, but with my signature breakbeat influence.

To capture that authentic UK vibe, I incorporated vocals from the newly released Flodan sample pack (yes, those vocals – but they fit perfectly). The result? A bass-bin shaking monster, packed with intricate sound design, complex basslines, and driving, energetic beats.

Again I wasn't lucky enough to win the Triple J competition so now I'm giving my version away for free. Not sure how long it will last before it gets taken down so grab it whilst you can!

Ahead of the next release on mine & Philly Blunts label Grits N Gravy I thought I'd give out this cheeky little nugget that I made a while ago. It's my version of the classic 'Sir Duke' by the legend that is Stevie Wonder with a bit of a Nu Funk / Ghetto Funk twist. 

I didn't really want to do to much to the song structure or add in too much so have tried to keep it quite subtle on the bass side of things (although I have put in a whole new bassline) but added some cool new beats, chops, fills & edits. It fits nicely into things at 115bpm.

I’ve been saying for ages to everyone that would listen ‘I’ve got that on 45’ but no one seemed to care! So to remedy that, I’ve put together this mix of some of my finest 45s & 7s. It's (nearly) 90 mins of funk, hip hop, latin & disco featuring tunes & mixes by Quantic Soul Orchestra, Fort Knox Five, Smoove, De La Soul, Andy Cooper, James Brown, Edwin Star & many more. There’s some of the records that Mr Doris & I have made & released. I've been crate diggings all over the world for years & this is a selection of those little spinny gems. 

The mix isn’t perfect but 45s mixes never are. If you’ve not tried to mix these little suckers together I can honestly tell you’ve they’ve got a mind of their own. Some of them are 50 years old! In fact one on the mix is 55 years old. If you listen closely you can hear the needle skipping on a number of occasions. But it’s these imperfections that give it all character. I very much enjoyed mixing it & I hope you too enjoy the selection…

Here's one my tried & tested bangers from the vaults. I've played this so much over the years & it's always worked a treat! In fact I made this to play at Break da House, the breaks & electro night we used to do in UK so it's an older edit. I lost the original project file so this is the edit I've been using. As they say it's an oldie but a goodie! 

The original (Hey You) What's That Sound was released in 1999 & became one of the instant classic electro tracks of that period. Les Rythmes Digitales, who's actually called Stuart Price, also produced as Jacques La Cont (amongst others) & went on to produce for Madonna & they made the Abba sampling 'Hung Up'.

Gadigal Land/Sydney & Boorloo/Perth-based Grits N Gravy has, for over half a decade, been responsible for a series of funky, fun and intentional releases from Australia and abroad.

Their latest sees a mix of Australian, Aotearoa/New Zealand, UK & Ibiza, in the form of ‘You’. The original track, premiered today via Mixmag ANZ, features Mr Doris & label-head D-Funk pairing up with vocalist Cantaloop, with remixes by Dazzla and DiCE_NZ.

Of the track, the artists shared:

Mr Doris - “We got the funk! D-Funk and I went down a 4x4 groove with this while keeping as close to a live sound as we could. Keeping things solidly in the southern hemisphere, we got Australia’s own DaZZla and NZ’s finest Dice on remix duties.”

D-Funk: “Whilst Mr Doris was down here in Sydney, we took the rare opportunity to get in the studio together physically. We usually work remotely with him being based in Ibiza & now London. The funk was flowing strong on this project, as it generally does when we produce together. Dannie from Cantaloop's sultry vocals give the track such a soulful vibe, with the live instruments making up the backbone of the track. We wanted it to sound as organic as possible & I think we nailed it!”

Nicc Johnson & Doug Masters - 'Never Knew' [Free Download]

Twenty-five years is a fair chunk of time by anyone’s estimation but for Doug Masters, he remembers his first ever DJ gig at The Depot in Bristol like it was yesterday. “I was so nervous I thought I’d never do it again,” he says. “Little did I know that I’d end up playing thousands of times more and at some of the best clubs and festivals all over the world.” 

Marking 25 years that has seen Doug release on labels including Sunday Best, Bombstrikes and Westway with his D-Funk alias, become one of the architects of the funky breaks sound with his mid-2000s night Break Da House and play everywhere from Ibiza to the US, Canada, Europe and his adopted home of Australia, Doug has embarked on two mixes to celebrate his two and a half decades in the game. 

“I’m lucky to have been through so many scenes,” says Doug. “I caught the tail-end of the rave scene in the UK, zipping around to find parties in fields and in disused railway tunnels and then moved through progressive house to trance to UK garage and breaks and then on to my own production journey in the 2000s. I wanted to put together some mixes that reflected all of that.”

The first mix of the two-part series is a collection of tunes that have influenced Doug over the years, touching on everything from disco & house to UK garage & breaks to jungle, while the second collects together 25 of Doug’s personal favourites from his illustrious career as a producer. 

“I was lucky enough to spread a style of music I loved and helped create around the globe,” says Doug. “I want to celebrate that and everything that influenced me along the way with these two mixes.”

More D-Funk!

Sydney-based, British born DJ, D-Funk has amassed a fair few achievements in his 25-years on the decks. Making his club debut at The Depot in Bristol in 1995, he’s gone on to DJ all over the world, playing notable sets at Space Ibiza and Ministry Of Sound and released on labels including Sunday Best and Bombstrikes. 

Getting his first set of decks at 14, Doug initially fell for the sounds of jungle and techno before a night dancing to house icon Tony De Vit in 1997 turned him towards the slinkier sounds of house music. 

His DJ career began to take off during his time at university in Wolverhampton where he started to pick up gigs at the Canal Club and Mezzanine, playing alongside DJs including Joey Negro, Mr Fingers, Scott Bond and Lisa Lashes, before a move to the South-Coast town of Bournemouth led him to eventually start his own night ‘Break Da House’ in 2004. 

The night took off, attracting big names including The Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs and eventually led to D-Funk’s first release, the ‘Electrotek’ EP after Dub Pistols headlined one night and Barry Ashworth from the band decided to release Doug’s music on his Westway label. The track found its way onto a TV ad in Portugal, as well as becoming a mainstay on Kiss FM’s breakbeat chart and gave Doug the confidence to pursue a career as a producer as well as a DJ, eventually leading to releases on Adapted Records and Ghetto Funk among countless other labels over the next 15 years. 

Moving to Sydney Australia in 2009, Doug started his label Upstart Music, releasing his own productions alongside tracks from the likes of Crackerz & Jam, Niko & Lyall and Rogue Robot and later started the funk label Grits N Gravy alongside friend and funk producer Philly Blunt, with the label winning the ‘Best Label’ award at Perth Dance Music Awards in 2010. 

Since living in Sydney, Doug has held down residencies at The World Bar and The Standard/Middlebar for the best part of a decade, as well as regular slots at Sash, Ivy, Goros, Hugos and many others. He’s played events for high profile companies such as Blackberry, Telstra, Jagermeister,  Sydney Cricket Ground & Saatchi & Saatchi. But there was still demand for him back on the side of the world and he regularly returned to Europe to play at Space Ibiza (including a set at the penultimate night of Carl Cox’s Revolution party) as well as touring in the UK, Europe, Asia and Canada. 

Now 25 years into his career, Doug is about to mark the 10th anniversary of his label Grits ‘N’ Gravy, with a compilation due this year mixed by himself and Philly Blunt, and has been busy producing house, hip hop and nu-disco with his current production partner Mr Doris.
