This is one of those rare bands that understand how to create a massive wall of sound, non-stop, without sounding muddled or forced. This is easily the heaviest new band I've heard in about a year, and they're pretty damn good at it.

Black Awakening are one of those modern black/sludge/doom/whatever bands that have been popping up more and more over the past few years. It's interesting to note that this is a 2-piece project, much like Anaal Nathrakh and Conan - two of the loudest, nastiest bands I can name. Their sound is similar to that of Conan, but with blackened vocals and a satanic lyrical bent. Definite Celtic Frost/Triptykon influences - the Frost is strong in this one!

Damn, those basslines pulse right down to the Earth's core. The guitars grind and wind with wicked fury; the doomy mutes, chugs, bends and stop-start bits are all utilized to great effect here. Every cymbal strike cuts through the wall, creating the needed contrast to keep the listener from slowly drowning in the tarry mass of sludge (metal). The chorus line on the opener sticks like a mantra - go ahead, give it a listen - it's all you can do to stop yourself growl-drawling "ALLLL .... HAAAIIILLL". And I'll be damned if the majority of "Pillars of Creation" doesn't sound like some kind of planetary wrecking ball. This one's somehow even heavier and nastier than the first. Just thick, loud, raw, sludgy goodness. The vocals take a while to come in on this, but when they do, an intense presence is felt. They're great on track 1 too, but damn they shine here. The guy does black metal rasps better than a lot of purist BM vocalists.

Conan fans would probably love this, if they're keen on harsh vocals that is. To others, I say this - give Black Awakening a listen if you're on the hunt for some raw, dark, nasty doom that playing on blast could overturn the tombstones in the next town over.
