Olaf Stuut - Siren (Dauwd Remix)

Axel Boman broke through in 2010 with his Holy Love EP, released on DJ Koze's Pampa Records. The track Purple Drank became an instant classic in underground house music circles – since then, Boman has toured extensively while releasing original productions and remixes on labels like DFA, Hypercolour, Kompakt, Permanent Vacation and Ovum, as well as on Studio Barnhus, the label he runs together with Kornél Kovács and Petter Nordkvist.

Family Vacation, Boman's debut album, arrives on Studio Barnhus in November 2013.

“I decided to go through the vast collection of ideas and sketches I had on my computer, as a final project before I set that machine on fire and let it all go up in flames. Kind of like what Lee "Scratch" Perry did with The Black Ark in Kingston in the 70's. A friend says the album sounds like “weird Jamaican space disco" so maybe it's a fitting reference”, says Boman himself.

Axel Boman's music has also been described as "raw and playful house music drenched in oceans of soul". He graduated with a master's degree from Valand School of Fine Arts in 2010 and currently lives in the calm and peaceful Stockholm suburb Gröndal.

Two of the most promising young producers in their respective countries today—Korean artist Sima Kim and Japan's Ryuei Kotoge—teamed up earlier this summer to work on the shifty "Rêveur". On their own, both create shadowy electronic tracks that balance a sense of unease without sacrificing melody. "Rêveur" moves at a relaxed pace, and the producers sprinkle some Brainfeeder-worthy laser sounds over the groove. They also throw in some twists—channel-hopping sounds, intimidating bass squall, and vocal samples yelping away. Dropping Gems is proud to present DJAO’s self-titled debut album. Three years in the making, producer/vocalist DJAO (a.k.a Alex Osuch) has created an auditory narrative in a similar manner to a collection of linked stories, stylistically diverse but based within the same world, told by a single narrator.

Composed during times of personal growth and inner reflection, the material presented on DJAO takes the listener on a serene, often ethereal journey. As a testament to navigating life’s challenges and successes, the arc of the album explores the pattern of introduction, engagement, and struggle, as told through Osuch’s raw emotional looking-glass. 

From the literal emergence of “Good Morning” to the concluding paroxysm of “Can’t Make Music Forever,” the album describes a path towards clarity and understanding where there are almost as many steps backwards as forwards. Appropriately, DJAO is the first release to directly showcase Osuch’s vocal talents, with sung lyrics shifting from back to foreground (and back again), enveloped in delay-soaked reverb.

In assembling this album Osuch drew upon a wide range of sounds, letting electric piano, synthesizers, and deep bass tones handle most of the melodic duty. Guitar played by Zuri Birginger adds to the palette towards the end of the album. The pace of the tracks is defined by intricate & texture-heavy drum programming, which rhythmically shift from downtempo to juke/footwork-influenced sensibilities. Behind it all, a certain fuzzy haze persists throughout the collection.

DJAO will be released October 28th 2014 via digital retailers and Bandcamp where limited edition cassette tapes will also be available.
