Steve Wozniak aka “The Woz” learned about phreaking from the 1971 Esquire article “Secrets of the Little Blue Box” by Ron Rosenbaum. Half way through the article, Woz called his friend, Steve Jobs, and read it to him. They were fascinated by the exploits of JoyBubble, Captain Crunch, and the underground telephone hackers who were whistling their way into Ma Bell, also known as AT&T, which was the largest company in the world, employing over one million people and controlling almost all U.S. local and long distance service, as well as the equipment in most homes and networks. In the bustling world of instrumental grime, Mr. Mitch’s ‘Peace Dub’ phenomenon - initially a concept aimed squarely at flipping grime’s ‘war dub’ complex on it’s head - has fast become a reputable sub-genre all of it’s own. With a series of his own peace edits garnering plenty of recognition online over the course of 2014, Mitch has enlisted a trio of new-school producers to assist him in re-contextualising four unconventional classics and with it, christen a new series of peace-themed white label 12”s.

Simply titled PEACE001, Mitch is joined by Gobstopper signees Strict Face and Loom, as well as elusive beat-making trio Silk Road Assassins on the label’s first ever physical record - a body of work that takes instrumental grime even further into unchartered territory. Kicking off with the brooding heartache of Mitch’s fuzzy, emotionally charged re-rub of Dru Hill’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’, there’s also space for Strict Face to turn an icier, washed-out hand to the peace aesthetic on ‘Alice’ - his beautifully mellow, minimalist rework of Alice Deejay classic ‘Better Off Alone’.

Latest signee Loom opts to take a deconstructionist route through Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ as glitchy melodies, ushered reverb and pitched-up vocal loops meet harsh, industrial sampling in unerringly dystopian collision of ideas, whilst Silk Road Assassins sign off with their take on T-Pain’s ‘Im Sprung’. Trickling, iced-out melodies and pitched-down vocals are laid over dark, menacing bass rumbles in a tribute to the sound that has already earmarked the trio as refreshingly slick sound designers.

Plastician’s Terrorhythm continue their 2017 apace with the release of new Deadcrow ‘Light Trails’, the follow up to 2016 debut, ‘Night Wonder’ — one of the label’s most successful releases of the last 12 months.

A producer in a similar mould to recent debutant, Klasey Jones, Deadcrow’s hi-def beats and sharp, shimmering melodies project a widescreen, OST-inspired approach to beat programming, only underpinned by harder, trap sensibilities. Wave, the term loosely used to describe music that draws inspiration from instrumental cloud-wave rap, drill and grime, is a core influence, but as EP opener ‘Viper’ suggests, Deadcrow’s music feels rooted in sci-fi fantasy and bright, neon futures.

Synths are a constant, defining feature across all five tracks and at their headiest on spar-kling track, ‘Blade’, with heavyset, rumbling sub patterns also giving the full EP legs for the club — particularly on booming, curveball ’Strayed’ — where Deadcrow will no doubt make his presence felt in 2017 too.

I thought I was finished with my dj edit pack untill I woke up on this monday morning. As I opened my phone scrolling through instagram I bumped into this video of Kanye West nodding his head wildly with a big choir behind him covering Fred Hammonds "this is the day". This gave me so much energy I immediately hopped out of bed and sampled the shit out of it.

I teased a clip of the beat on Instagram and it blew up. That's when Denzel Curry reached out and asked me to jump on it.

DJ/producer and Fool’s Gold’s co-founder Nick Catchdubs discovered Jersey City MC Vincent, The Owl online and immediately reached out, recognizing a kindred spirit and fellow Jersey-born enthusiast of all things bugged out.
