La Scolopendra cingulata è la più importante specie europea, distribuita lungo tutta la regione mediterranea compresa l'Africa. Questa si presenta solitamente di un colore brunastro, con la testa e l'ultimo segmento del tronco di colore rosso. Le sue dimensioni arrivano a 10–15 cm di lunghezza e sopravvive predando insetti e altri invertebrati. La scolopendra cingolata è da considerarsi un animale relativamente o totalmente innocuo per l'uomo, sebbene il suo morso, piuttosto doloroso (che comunque avviene solo se l'animale si sente in pericolo), sia in grado di causare reazioni locali (arrossamento, gonfiore, prurito, dolore). In soggetti particolarmente iper-reattivi (allergici), dopo la puntura può rendersi necessaria la somministrazione di farmaci cortisonici; in caso di gravi reazioni sistemiche, si rende necessario il ricovero d'urgenza al più vicino pronto soccorso. Altre specie presenti in Europa sono S. canidens, S. cingulata, S. clavipes, S. cretica, S. dalmatica, S. oraniensis, S. subspinipes e S. valida [1].

La Scolopendra gigantea, nota anche come centopiede gigante dell'Amazzonia rappresenta la specie di scolopendra più grande del mondo, arrivando ad essere lunga più di 30 cm. Queste sue dimensioni le permettono di poter cacciare anche vertebrati come rane e persino pipistrelli [2]. Questa specie abita le regioni settentrionali ed occidentali del Sudamerica fino alle isole di Trinidad e Giamaica. Per le sue dimensioni e i colori, questa specie è piuttosto popolare tra gli amanti degli artropodi, facendo bella mostra di sé nei terrari. La famiglia Scolopendridi, diffusa soprattutto nelle regioni tropicali e subtropicali, ha corpo appiattito, formato da 25-27 segmenti, con 21-23 paia di zampe, e occhi formati da quattro ocelli per lato; il morso di alcune specie provoca forti dolori e può provocare reazioni allergiche anche violente. Il Genere Scolopendra (v. fig.) ha tronco di 21 segmenti (oltre il segmento dei piedi mascellari e i due genitale e anale), ciascuno con un paio di zampe. La specie più comune nel bacino mediterraneo è Scolopendra cingulata, lunga fino a 10 cm, che vive sotto le pietre e si ciba di altri Artropodi.

Grover Washington, Jr. (December 12, 1943 – December 17, 1999)was an American jazz-funk / soul-jazz saxophonist. Along with Wes Montgomery, George Shearing, George Benson, John Klemmer, David Sanborn, Bob James, Chuck Mangione, Herb Alpert, and Spyro Gyra, he is considered by many to be one of the founders of the smooth jazz genre.[citation needed] He wrote some of his material and later became an arranger and producer.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Washington made some of the genre's most memorable hits, including "Mister Magic," "Reed Seed," "Black Frost," "Winelight," "Inner City Blues" and "The Best is Yet to Come". In addition, he performed very frequently with other artists, including Bill Withers on "Just the Two of Us" (still in regular rotation on radio today), Patti LaBelle on "The Best Is Yet to Come" and Phyllis Hyman on "A Sacred Kind of Love". He is also remembered for his take on the Dave Brubeck classic "Take Five", and for his 1996 version of "Soulful Strut".

Washington had a preference for black nickel-plated saxophones made by Julius Keilwerth. These included a SX90R alto and SX90R tenor. He also played Selmer Mark VI alto in the early years. His main soprano was a black nickel plated H.Couf Superba II (also built by Keilwerth for Herbert Couf) and a Keilwerth SX90 in the last years of his life.
