Solid Steel (20th September) Strictly Kev gives us a companion to his earlier 'O Is For Orange' mix with another selection based around the Boards of Canada sound called 'T Is For Trapped'. Hitting a more techno vein for the first half, he threads tracks from The Simonsound, Sanctums, Alva Noto and Boards in their Hell Interface guise into the travelogue. There's unreleased material in the form of his extended re-edit of 'Reach For The Dead' and the Peel Session track 'XYZ' as well as lead track by Le Boac, a new project by Posthuman. He then takes it into darker ambient territory with John Carpenter, Alan Howarth and Vangelis before emerging into the sunlight with a whole heap of older Ghost Box material.

There has been a lot of talk, to put it mildly, about Britain’s statues and slavery. But what about Britain’s statues and anti-slavery? It turns out, that, while statues of slavers are among the statues Britain shows off, statues of anti-slavery activists are, in curious contrast, some of the statues Britain hides. To take us into Black History Month in the UK, Dr Coleman asks what, exactly, in its anti-slavery statues, Britain is hiding.

About the speaker

Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias C̶o̶l̶e̶m̶a̶n̶ is an independent scholar-activist, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Warwick, and Public Engagement Co-ordinator for Citizens Researching Together at the University of Bristol. They are the incoming Project Director of 81 Acts of Exuberant Defiance. Born and based in Birmingham, they are writing a book about our collective memory of the colonial and anti-colonial arguments by which Birmingham built and attempted to abolish British Empire, called The House By the Rivers of Blood.

Monuments Research Season

Every Wednesday throughout September we will present new research around monuments in a variety of forms, ranging from pre-recorded lectures to podcasts and artists films.

Topics will include the relationship between monuments, gender and sexuality, the role of religion and politics, monuments and colonial memory, and artists’ responses to monumentality. All material will be available to access online on our website and YouTube channel.

Part 2. Track notes: 
These recordings are taken from cassettes, DAT tapes & CDRs so the quality and fidelity varies, there’s tape hiss, the odd drop out and distortion but that’s the way they came out. PC remastered a few bits and pieces and some tracks are edits / re-edits. Lots of these versions aren’t fully mixed down or mastered in anyway either but I like that rawness. 

The late, great John Peel evidently liked the album, playing several tracks over the weeks preceding the album's release, even asking us in for a session (see the debut Mixcloud Select upload) I’ve included a few of his comments from broadcasts only recently found online.

'Speed of Death' was originally written for the companion CD to the film 'Injustice'. the film depicts the struggle by the families of those killed within police custody in the UK. Between 1969 and 1999, 1000 people had their lives cut short by the police, and not one police man/woman has ever faced a trial or found to be responsible for these deaths. 
In further insult to the families of those seeking answers from the state, the police employed legal tactics to prevent many public screenings or broadcasts on TV.

Ultra Violence is the follow-up film, 10 years in the making. Once again, it is a film the police do not want you to see, and the same with the state.
