genuine question guys, is sampling stealing? I have been battling this question recently. I feel like if the common consensus is that if you have permission it's fine, but what about if the artist is dead.is it like, do unto others what you would have done unto you? but then some people don't mind having their work sampled after death. (but even back then in mozarts time sampling was used in interpolating melodies). idk. I used to think nothing was original therefore all work being sampled is fine because no one owns any solitary idea. it's like the maker of the piano saying no one can use the sound because he made it, know what I mean?. at the end of most of this thinking i came to the kind of thought that was like, I think it;s a problem with the system not the art. COMPARE it to an artistic collage. do you own any of the parts? no. but do you own the whole artwork and the original piece before you? yes. why? because you bought it. maybe sampling is fine if you buy the product? like, if it were milk and i bought some milk, i can use that milk however i like. maybe it's like that. I mean, back in mozarts time they did one song and sold it and no longer owned the rights after it was bought. so like, all that's changed is the governing power over the streams and intellectual property. idk man. what do you guys think?
