One of the common things I've heard people say they love about my music is transparency. I feel like that honesty allows for people to relate and hopefully be encouraged that they are not alone. As I was working on Empire, I remember being in a late night studio session with Dirty Rice and Tony Tillman. Our session had come to a halt as we watched riots and protests erupt in Ferguson, Missouri. My heart was broken. It prompted me to write a song. 

One thing that I've noticed in today's climate is we are a forgetful people. All of us have experienced great hurts and disappointments. In those moments, our desire isn't to be fixed or fact checked. It is to be healed. We just want the hurt to go away. We just want to be loved regardless of our mistakes.

The only way our nation will heal is if people begin to empathize with one another. We don't have to agree, but we can hear each other out. We don't have to understand each other's hurt, but we can be there to console one another. The Bible tells us to encourage and build one another up. Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet He did not sin.” 

He felt our pain.

Jesus saw people who were rioters, self-righteous, and of all different backgrounds. He could have easily said, “They need to get what they deserve.” but instead He died the death ALL of us should have died.

I propose that we die to our pride. Let's die to our desire to win arguments and seek to heal one another. Let's empathize with one another. Let's build REAL relationships with people that don't look like us.

About a year ago D.Scott and Luke Witherspoon connected in an off-chance meeting on Twitter. Both characteristically "other", they knew that if they put their sounds together, it would be unconventional, and that is exactly what they wanted. Their first foray, "Luke XI" released in November of 2014 as a pre-cursor to D.Scott's "Masterpiece". The song received rave reviews and open their minds to the possibilities of further work.
 

Their follow up was a feature on Scott's "SALVUS" EP, released in April of 2015. Luke produced the Intro and "Bow" featuring Dallas' own T2 (Taylor and Tyler Walton). The resurrection themed EP was a pre-cursor to a full length album of Witherspoon & Scott's. Fast forward a full year from their meeting on social media and "The Tide" was born--a full collaborative effort between the two artists.
 

"It's hard to see my work without Luke's stamp on it. He understands my musical sensibility and my passion for presentation and content. I'm shocked every time I record a record of his and it comes out as if we were recording in the same space. When in actuality, Luke and I have never met one another in person."
 

The tide is a summer EP from Scott and Witherspoon. Scott will be taking time to work on a new full length project and tour as well as work on various projects in music and art. Witherspoon will be crushing the radio with his signature sound and working as an executive producer on the next D.Scott LP.

“Jesus Is” has a very simple melody (like our other songs), which means the accompaniment that the melody lays in can be more intricate-–they won’t compete with each other. This song was originally recorded live by Hillsong London, and later covered in the studio by Sound of the New Breed. Our take is an expanded live arrangement of New Breed’s version. I think we’ve combined the best of both worlds–the energy of a live recording with singing and music more reflective of the context in which we minister.
