Johann Sebastian Bach est né à Eisenach, en Allemagne, le 21 (ou le 31, selon notre calendrier) mars 1685. Sa famille est très musicienne et c’est tout naturellement qu’il étudie la musique. Il devient organiste et compose de très nombreuses pièces religieuses. Bach est très bien considéré dans toute l’Allemagne, même si pendant longtemps sa renommée n’a été que celle d’un organiste virtuose. Il devient ainsi compositeur (à titre honorifique) de la cour de Saxe en 1736, et côtoie Frédéric II le Grand (l’employeur de son fils Carl Philipp Emanuel) qui l’invite à Potsdam en 1747. Il meurt à Leipzig, aveugle, le 28 juillet 1750. Parmi ses nombreuses œuvres, on trouve par exemple les Six concertos brandebourgois, l’Art de la fugue ou encore la Passion selon saint Matthieu. Bach est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des plus grands musiciens de tous les temps.
