Switzerland-based pairing @dachshund & Chaton team up for their first collaboration this August with the Bleeping In Me EP. This marks Dachshund’s second release on Rebellion, fresh from 2012’s The Mammoth, whilst Chaton makes his debut.

Both artists spoke about the inspiration behind the release, stating: “Bleeping In Me is about deep expression; Euphoria is about exploring melodies and simplicity; and the idea behind Otaku 1996 was to make a cool track straight out of Detroit in the nineties.”

The title track leads the charge, taking the form of a slow-building, minimal-toned number as subtle hats build upon punchy, whip-like kicks. Euphoria soon arrives, pairing emotive key solos next to resonant synth combos before Otaku 1996 completes proceedings. The eight minute piece leaves few prisoners in its wake, manifesting as a late-night, club-ready cut that’s built purely for the dancefloor.

Dachshund has been a regular of Switzerland's club circuit for decades. Having co-found Clapper alongside fellow Swiss-talent Quenum, the imprint acts as an outlet for solely self-made productions, whilst Dachshund has also found a welcome home on Nick Curly’s 8bit and Audiojack’s Gruuv to name a few. From playing his first gig abroad at the iconic Panorama Bar, to mixing number 201 of RA’s coveted mix series, Chaton has remained a pillar of quality electronic music since the early 2000’s. His own label, Plak Records, has been a bastion of contemporary minimal techno for twenty years and he continues such a legacy thanks to his recently launched vinyl-only imprint, Useless Transmissions.

His EP for Poker Flat, Division, is quality through
and through, with all three tracks delivering the
uniquely spellbinding goods.

The title track opens with warm, steadily rising

stabs and stripped-back percussion, with a side-
winding synth line soon taking centre stage. Deep

and rich yet with a serious amount of low-end
punch, Division is a wonderful, timeless slice of
house music from the very top drawer.
Corruption delights with a trippy, off-kilter rhythm
and the interplay between its bubbling synths
and warped vocal samples while completing the
package is Only, which sits somewhere between

classic Chicago and progressive house, combi-
ning tough beats and open hats with soaring synth

lines and a steadily rising tension to impressively
dramatic effect.

Dachshund is the artist name of Olivier Doret, a DJ and producer based in Geneva, Switzerland who is also the Co-founder of the Clapper label. 

With releases dating back to 2006, Dachshund is an established entity in the scene, and has built a strong and loyal following among those in the know. 

With this Cozy Mess EP on Poker Flat Recordings, he dials in directly to his signature sound - beautifully produced tech-leaning house with tonnes of atmosphere and vibe.  

Cozy Mess, the title track develops around an ethereal arpeggiated melody that undulates and evolves, while restrained synth stabs punctuate the groove. 

Lust offers up a similarly enthralling journey, a mini epic that integrates minor keys and pads. 

Hidden Echos is the last track on the EP, with a tougher beat that sets the tone for some dubby and effected sounds to float on top, creating a rich atmosphere carried forward by sharply programmed drums.

We continue strongly into 2024 with an artist we have loved for quite some time here at Berlin-Brighton towers. We are very excited to to have been able to catch up with Dachshund who has also delivered an exquisite selection of vibes as part of his guest mix.

Being a rather prolific producer, Dachshund has released tracks on various imprints such as Bar 25 Music, Highgrade, 8Bit, Gruuv, Upon You, Rebellion to name a few and also made some remixes on labels like Noir Music, Systematic, Kling Klong, and many more. 

Based on an open approach and a taste for what is unpretentious yet complex, his musical  preference is for groovy music crafted under the influence of emotions, not fashion. His incredible and lengthy discography tells you everything you need to know. 

We caught up with Dachshund to find out more about his reggae and D'n'B roots plus his upcoming releases.

Dachshund - Shall We - Clapper

English version: Already the record’s cover shows the way: Tangled lines result in an image of a dog’s head, with its mischievously contrary look: Perhaps the hallmark of Dachshund, who advertises on his Facebook page that this is, “music for dogs” - an artist who is obviously not taking himself too seriously. But he has every reason to. The Swiss native jets around the world as a DJ, is an extremely resourceful producer with an unwavering sense of rhythm and beats and has also now established his own label, “Clapper”. None of this seems to be enough for Dachshund. With “Eleven Ridims” he presents his debut album on the Berlin label “Highgrade”. Let us state clearly: The record is a victory for those who are tired of the sterile monotony that populates so much of the music to be found in the current scene. In each of the eleven tracks you can hear the heart and soul of a thoroughbred musician. Although “Eleven Ridims” is incredibly varied, from the melodic and quiet, to the pounding dancefloor killers and back, the album works as a unified whole. Perhaps this is a result of it’s method of creation. “It felt completely natural to make this album,” Dachshund says himself. In the beginning the beats and melodies were established in his head, and from there they almost seemed to evolve into tracks by themselves.

For Dachshund, “Eleven Ridims” is a unique opportunity to show another side of himself: From the path of pure dancefloor tracks through to more melodic pieces. At the same time, the album is a tribute to his musical roots. As the title suggests: “Ridims” is a Jamaican slang term for an instrumental track. And very clearly from the sunny islands come many of Dachshunds musical influences: It was the Jamaican dub of the 70s to the 90s, which as a teenager inspired the budding musician and led him, as a 15 year old, to play guitar in a reggae band. From that point on, the music has never let him go: At the Konservatorium in Geneva, he took courses in electro-acoustics and learned pretty much everything there was to know about producing music. Gradually, his interest developed more towards Electronic Dub - he began to organize drum and bass parties and mixed records, and eventually ended up where he is today. The Reggae and Dub influence of his past is still clearly evident here. As with the track “Intensity Dub”, in which he brings the rough riding and natural sound of the past back to life. Analogue techniques result in distorted sounds, which radiate a unique energy. “I like it because it reminds me of my beginnings”, Dachshund says. The track is very different from the standard Dub Techno – a stroke of luck for Dachshund and typical of his method of making, music: “When I compose, I don’t like rules, but try to be spontaneous and open,” he says.

For Dachshund, “Eleven Ridims” is a new step in his career. A step however, in which he feels no pressure. “It was great that I had the freedom with Highgrade to do what I wanted,” he says. He isn’t nervous, but simply excited about the upcoming reactions. And the reactions for “Eleven Ridims” can only be those of excitement and delight.

Dabei hätte er allen Grund dazu. Der Schweizer jettet als DJ um die Welt, ist ein überaus einfallsreicher Producer mit einem untrüglichen Sinn für Rhythmen und Beats und hat noch dazu mit „Clapper“ sein eigenes Label gegründet. Das alles scheint Dachshund nicht zu reichen. Mit „Eleven Ridims“ stellt er nun sein Debütalbum beim Berliner Label „Highgrade“ vor. Eines gleich vorneweg: Die Platte ist eine Wohltat für all jene, die genug haben vom sterilen Einheitsbrei, den so mancher Kopf der Szene heutzutage produziert. Jedem einzelnen der elf Tracks hört man das Herzblut eines Vollblutmusikers an. Obwohl „Eleven Ridims“ unglaublich abwechslungsreich ist, vom melodisch-ruhigeren Track zum und hämmernden Dancefloor-Stück und zurück, wirkt die Scheibe doch wie aus einem Guss. Vielleicht ein Ergebnis der Entstehungsgeschichte. „Es fühlte sich natürlich an, das Album zu machen“, sagt Dachshund selbst. Am Anfang habe es in seinem Kopf Beats und Melodien zu geben, aus denen sich wie von selbst die Tracks entwickelt hätten.

Für ihn ist „Eleven Ridims“ eine einmalige Chance, eine andere Seite von sich zu zeigen: Weg von den reinen Dancefloor-Tracks hin zu melodischeren Stücken. Gleichzeitig ist das Album eine Hommage an seine musikalischen Wurzeln, was schon der Titel verrät: „Ridims“ ist ein jamaikanischer Slang-Ausdruck für einen instrumentalen Track. Und genau von der Sonneninsel stammen auch Dachshunds musikalische Einflüsse: Es war der Jamaican Dub der 70er bis 90er Jahre, der ihn bereits als Teenager begeisterte und dafür sorgte, dass er schon als 15-Jähriger Gitarre in einer Reggae-Band spielte. Von da an ließ ihn die Musik nicht mehr los: Am Konservatorium in Genf belegte er Kurse in Elektroakustik und lernte so ziemlich alles, was es über das Produzieren von Musik zu wissen gibt. Allmählich entwickelte sich sein Interesse mehr in Richtung elektronischer Dub – er begann Drum’n’Bass-Partys zu organisieren und zu mixen, um schließlich dort zu landen, wo er heute ist. Der Reggae und Dub von einst ist ihm allerdings immer noch anzuhören – wie etwa im Track „Intensity Dub“: Darin lässt er den rauen, ungekünstelten Sound von einst wiederauferstehen, analoge Techniken erzeugen einen verzerrten Klang, der eine ganz eigene Energie verströmt. „Ich mag das, weil es mich an meine Anfänge erinnert“, sagt Dachshund selbst dazu. Der Track unterscheidet sich so stark vom üblichen Dub-Techno – für Dachshund ein Glücksfall. Und typisch für seine Art, Musik zu machen. „Wenn ich komponiere, mag ich keine Regeln, sondern versuche spontan und offen zu sein“, beschreibt er.

Für Dachshund ist „Eleven Ridims“ ein neuer Schritt in seiner Karriere – bei dem er jedoch keinen Druck verspürte. „Es war toll, dass ich bei Highgrade die Freiheit hatte, das zu tun, was ich will“, betont er. Nervös sei er nun nicht, eher gespannt auf die Reaktionen. Und die können bei „Eleven Ridims“ einfach nur begeistert ausfallen.
