Space Coast - Love Games Pt. 2 (Homeboy Dub)

The mighty Daco is back on Paper after a move to Spain and time spent sailing the high seas. He sent us a whole load of fresh music so we’ve taken the best and will be releasing it over a series of three EPs before collating them on an album later in the year.

Meine Killer launches things and it’s a quality deep house track that is soulful and catchy with enough wallop to rock any floor. Die Hexen’s vocal has a touch of Propaganda’s Claudia Brücken to give it a 80s Eastern European flavour. There is slinky bass, live drums and a chorused guitar that nags all the way through for some main room clout.

The live mix keeps all the same qualities of the original but takes the alley named “Boogie”. Live congas, percussion, disco guitar and the bass is given a bit more head to do it’s thing. It’s strictly analogue business here and if you want it live, it’s all here baby.

Struck Out goes all the way down the disco route and it's the sound of a tight-as-you-like house band on their night off having some fun when nobody’s watching. 70s synths, agogo a plenty and a heavy funk vibe makes this music for dance floors that flash.

Finally Dreadnought saves the heaviest till last and it’s future proto-balearic prog business. Arps chug away with a motorkik beat before breaking to a chord progression that is set to “build” and is the tone for the rest of the track. It’s got ALFOS and Prins Thomas written all over it and comes off like a lost Baldelli classic that would have shaken Cosmic to it’s foundations. Expect beard strokers to break their life long dance ban and ravers to lose their shit

Last autumn, Cologne-based duo COMA released their long-awaited sophomore full-length THIS SIDE OF PARADISE (KOMPAKT 335 CD 126) - Mixmag proclaimed the album as “a lush, melodic and electronic creature” that completely fits their wide sonic palate. The band gave free reign to have the artists that appear on this release remix their favorite tracks from the album. What we have is a trio of great reinterpretations that literally sound like they come from the heart: MOSCOMAN is definitely on his way to being hailed as a face to watch in 2016. His releases on ESP Institute, I'm A Cliché and Renate were played to death in our office, so we happily welcome him with this amazing remix of BORDERLINE. We got to know BAIO as a member of VAMPIRE WEEKEND - he has kept our ears on alert thanks to great releases on Greco-Roman and his phenomenal debut album. He takes on THE SEA in his own way and warps it into an epic dance floor bloomer. Look out for a remix of BAIO that COMA did which is expected out soon. ALEX HENTZE rounds off this release with a step-heavy crooner to end any great night out.

On March 3rd, Tiga asks that you finally return the favor by making him fall in love with the music with Make Me Fall In Love, the second single off his forthcoming full-length, No Fantasy Required which Annie Mac has premiered as a Hottest Record In The World. Featuring vocals by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears and the production acumen of Martin Buttrich, the track dials the vibe machine to the deepest, sexiest, slinkiest Lover’s Esperanto, a universal plea to understand universality in all its forms, be they melodic, spiritual, or simply the lowdown dirty lust between people without public lives, private bathrooms, and the sort of iTunes playlists that clear you seven figures a year.

The single also features a “Tiga vs. Audion” pop version of the track, which sees the two frequent collaborators - and original co-writers of the song - fun-tune the proceedings in an open and honest attempt to conquer the radio charts, which Tiga is convinced still exist.

“This is my attempt to speak the language of the people, to read something more into their white-bread tastes and European-bread politics,” says Tiga from Downtown Planet Earth. “If you simply listen hard enough, you can hear whatever you want, and that’s good enough for me.”

There’s always been a fertile creative tension at the heart of Tiga’s music: on the one hand he’s the underground techno don, on the other, there’s a pop sensibility that enables him to write great songs. It’s this duality that makes him one of electronic music’s most engaging characters. He’s about as far from your faceless techno DJ as it’s possible to get.

In his illustrious career, he’s remixed LCD Soundsystem, Depeche Mode, Coldcut, The XX, Fever Ray and Moby, among many others. He has used his Turbo label to break new acts like Duke Dumont (first release), Chromeo, Gesaffelstein and Boyz Noize. In addition, he has frequently collaborated with luminaries such as James Murphy, Pusha Tand, on No Fantasy Required, Hudson Mohawke, Paranoid London and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters. Now, working with key producer Matthew Dear, and Finnish wizard Jori Hulkkonen (who also performs with him live), 

No Fantasy Required (from which Make Me Me Fall In Love is taken) is a collection of inspired songs that just happen to be delivered via visceral dance music. Tiga has made a record on which he says he feels “more honest, open and playful.” It’s an album with songs and real character, one also packed with instant bangers.  No fantasy is required both because this is an honest, open, playful record and also because it provides all the fantasy you could need.

A quick listen to the radio suggests that disco is back, not that it ever went away here at Retrospective and over the past few months we’ve been proud to work with some of the biggest names on the scene including Heion, Hardway Bros and Ajello. Still there’s certainly something in the air and so what better time to welcome back to the label Spain’s King of the Re-Edits, Rayko, with a stunning new 4 track EP.

Since he last graced us with an EP he’s gone from strength to strength, clocking up an impressive run of releases on labels such as Lumberjacks in Hell, Rare Wiwi and an album soon to be released on NANG. Throw in a relentless touring schedule and it’s easy to see why Rayko is fast becoming one of the most loved names in modern day disco.

So here we have the ‘Can’t Get Enough’ EP, an apt title we think as the second the needle hits and the title track, a trademark boogie dancefloor smash, kicks in you’ll be up on your feet. The hypnotic bassline, the 80’s synth breaks and soulful vocals all combine to stunning effect guaranteeing this a place in the record boxes of the scene’s leading players.

Next up is Rock My World, a cheeky MJ sample and deliciously slow funky groove makes this dance floor dynamite. Flip over to the B side and Rayko increases the pressure with the fiery Step Out Of My Dreams before finally closing off the EP with Touch Me, reworking the classic Fonda Rae cut and delivering one of this summer’s sureshot poolside anthems.

With an unmistakable love and appreciation for disco and boogie and a true talent for taking the dusty classics of the past and given them a new lease of life, Rayko stand outs from the crowd. Internationally in demand as a DJ and with a huge following online, we’re delighted to welcome Rayko back to the Retrospective family.
