The eighth curator of tropicaldo is our countrywoman, who currently lives in New York, but who misses the warmth of Rio - the incomparable Mari Mac Dowell (@marimacdowell)!

DJ and record collector for over 15 years, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, now resides in Brooklyn, NY, where for almost four years she has been expanding her collection of obscure brazilian and african records, jazz, house and other eccentric noises. Inveterate music researcher she is always looking for hidden gems to elevate you to other frequencies. She hosts a weekly show at the Brooklynite FaceRadio with her Synth Waves program every Thursday evening.

“The idea of this mix was to take a musical trip around the world since we are currently not able to travel physically. There are no limits of genres and you'll find a blend that goes from 90s french rap to 80s jazz fusion, brazilian oddities mixed with UK house finishing with some nigerian disco funk and a samba-soul hidden gem from Rio de Janeiro. One hour of set is always a very big challenge and in the case of this one specifically I took a long time selecting the records affectionately since it would be made for a collective from my hometown, city which I miss so much. 

It was based on my musical research from the last few months in a combination of some old stuff with contemporary productions by new artists including brazilians with a more electronic and a dancing footprint to remind us a little of the great times at the dancefloors which hopefully will return soon. Hope that the mix can somehow relieve all this tension and struggle that we are experiencing today. Let's take care of each other, stay strong and heal through the music!”

DJ e colecionadora de discos há mais de 15 anos, nascida e criada no Rio de Janeiro mora no Brooklyn em NY onde há quase quatro anos vem expandindo sua coleção de discos obscuros brasileiros e africanos, jazz, house e outros ruídos sonoros excêntricos. Pesquisadora musical inveterada, está sempre procurando por jóias escondidas para elevar você a outras frequências. Ela apresenta um programa semanal na rádio novaiorquina The Face Radio restrita apenas aos amantes do vinil com seu programa Synth Waves todas as quintas-feiras à noite.

“A idéia desse mix foi dar uma passeada pelo mundo já que não estamos podendo viajar se desprendendo de um gênero fixo para trazer uma mistura de rap francês com jazz fusion inglês dos anos 80, brasilidades obscuras dançantes com house americano dos anos 90 finalizando com disco funk nigeriano e um bom swing brazuca. Uma hora de set é sempre um desafio muito grande e no caso deste especificamente, levei um tempo maior escolhendo os discos com muito carinho já que seria para um coletivo radicado na cidade onde nasci e que tanto amo. 

O mix traz um pouco da minha pesquisa musical dos últimos meses em um combinado de faixas oitentistas e noventistas com produções atuais de novos artistas incluindo brasileiros com uma pegada mais eletrônica e dançante para lembrarmos um pouco dos velhos tempos de pista que esperamos voltar em breve! Espero que gostem e que possa de alguma forma aliviar um pouco toda essa tensão que estamos vivendo! Seguimos em frente, se cuidem e vacina pra todos!”

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Bernardo is one of the biggest representants of the e-music in Rio. His career started to blossom in 2008 when he conquered club residencies such as Fosfobox, Dama de Ferro and Clandestino.
Meanwhile he established as a resident DJ for lots of relevant e-music parties, which culiminated in festa RARA – responsible to bring to Rio legends such as Derrick Carter and Derrick May in its first and second editions. Bernardo had the though task to make its warm-up for this icons, and in both opportunitties, it was praised by all (including the artists).
In his curriculum there are still presentations with Laurent Garnier, Moodymann, Carl Craig, Mark Farina, Solomun, Booka Shade, Jamie Jones, Magda, Anthony Rother among others. As musical producer he conquered charts in the Beatport site and had the support of the monstrous Maceo Plex in 2 of his releases among other names such as Maya Jane Coles, Jamie Jones, Groove Armada, Mandy, Robert Owens and more. In 2013 he was one of the most requested DJs from Rio de Janeiro, which gave him the “Prêmio Noite Rio” as best DJ of e-music in the city, besided his summer residency at the paradisiac Tikal Praia Bar, in Algodões, Bahia. Since the begining, his career has been growing steadily and well planned. It’s based in a constant music research and background which gives him respect from the underground, and also maleability to play in more pop dancefloors.

The seeds of KC & The Sunshine Band were planted when two South Florida boys, Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch met while working at the attic studio of T.K. Records, above the warehouse of Tones Distributors. Rick had worked his way up to assisting producers, while Harry's duties included processing returns and boxing up records, and sometimes playing keyboards in recording sessions.

It was Casey’s idea for him and Finch to pool their skills. "Everybody else had a team together already", says Rick. "He found out I played bass and drums, and I found out he played keyboards, and when the studio was empty in the evenings, we would go up there and find out what kind of music would happen. A lot of people would throw tape away because they couldn’t figure out how to make the machine erase properly, Rick recalls. It was expensive, so I would take it out of the trash can, wind it up on the reel, clean it up, and use that for recording".

Not only were the boys thrifty, but, thanks to the sessions they had already played in the studio, they were also fast. It didn’t take much experimenting for the two to get their own eclectic sound together. KC & The Sunshine Band released two singles from their first album, "Do It Good" and hit the R&B charts when "Blow Your Whistle" went to #27 in the fall of ’73 and "Sound Your Funky Horn" made it to #21 in early ’74.

The first real sign that the Casey/Finch sound was really clicking came in September of 1974, when "Queen Of Clubs" reached the U.K. Top 10, and the Sunshine Band was in demand for live gigs all around the country. This was good news, of course. But the best news was yet to come courtesy of one George McCrae and a song he wrote called "Rock Your Baby".

As studio musicians, Casey and Finch recorded the rhythm track in just 45 minutes, with just one additional player, Jerome Smith, on guitar. Company brass, Henry Stone and Steve Alaimo felt the song had potential and offered it to Gwen McCrae, who passed on it. Then, George McCrae, who happened into the studio, heard the instrumental and in a mere two takes, put down his own vocals. The song was released, and George McCrae had a number one hit on his hands.

Vitalino Emilio Santiago, better known as Emilio Santiago (Rio de Janeiro, December 6, 1946 - † Rio de Janeiro, March 20, 2013) was a Brazilian singer. 

Attending law school in the 1970s, began to sing in college festivals in the same decade and participated in a talent show, reaching a final program Flávio Cavalcanti, the defunct TV Tupi and the orchestra worked as a crooner Ed Lincoln, and many performances in clubs and concert halls at night. In 1973 the first single released, with songs of love and Transa de Amor and Saravá Nega, which caused major interests in radio and television programs. 

The first LP was released by IDC in 1975, with songs dedicated forgotten composers such as Ivan Lins, João Donato, Jorge Ben, Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, Marcos and Paulo Sergio Valle, among others. Moved the following year for Philips / Polygram, remaining on the seal until 1984, by which released ten albums - all with little effect. Was chosen as the best performer at the Festival of Festivals, TV Globo in 1985 with the song Elis Elis. 

Success came in 1988 actually, when they released the LP Aquarela Brasileira by Som Livre, a special project of seven volumes devoted exclusively to the repertoire of Brazilian music, all topped four thousand copies sold. At this time, has also launched other special projects, as a tribute to singer Dick Farney (Perdido de Amor, 1995) or by rewriting classic Hispanic bolero (Dias de Luna, 1996). 

He signed with Sony Music in 2000. The disc marks the debut of the new label is Bossa Nova, which brought many classics of the genre and also yielded a DVD. Continued with a smile (2001), a tribute to the composer Gonzaguinha and another with João Donato in 2003.

The latest album was "O Melhor das Aquarelas Ao Vivo" wich revised the repertoire of Brazilian music that he recorded the album from "Aquarela Brasileira" (1988), between the merits and that the account is first live DVD of Emilio and second career after bossa nova.

These events range from night clubs (large and small) to music festivals with more than 100,000 people. Since 1988, Parker has released more than 100 recordings on various labels, and has had top 20 hits with his songs "Love's Got Me High", "The Question" and albums like "Detroit After Dark" in the U.K., The Netherlands, Germany, and France. He is nicknamed "The Telephone man" because he uses a telephone handset as headphones.

In recent years his nickname changed to 'The Vanishing Man' due to the number of DJ shows he received money for but never turned up to play at.

Boogie (sometimes called post-disco and electro-funk)is a rhythm and blues genre of electronic dance music with close ties to the post-disco style, that first emerged in the United States during the late 1970s to mid-1980s. The sound of boogie defined by bridging acoustic and electronic musical instruments with emphasis on vocals and miscellaneous effects later evolved into electro and house music.

Boogie, following the example of post-disco, generally lacks the four-on-the-floor beat, the "traditional" rhythm of disco music; instead has a strong accent on the second and fourth beats, and tempo generally in the 110 to 120 beats-per-minute range. Aside from applying certain technological and promotional aspects of new wave music and having been fairly exposed to its subgenre synthpop, boogie is, however, R&B-rooted and predominantly draws from funk music. Other influences from a completely different music landscape include jazz. Typical boogie track can be characterized by mid-tempo rhythm, prominent use of slap bass (electric—in the early 1980s—and/or synthetic—mid-1980s onwards), loud clapping sound, melodic chords and, obviously, synthesizers.

And to remember the life we ​​love, we invited a great music researcher to the fourth edition that delights us with 50 minutes of pleasure to our senses: Priscilla Cavalcante, also known by the name House of Pris.

Priscilla Cavalcante was born in Fortaleza and was the first DJ and composer of electronic music from the state of Ceará. She lived 20 years in Amsterdam before moving to Miami 4 years ago and from where she commands the renowned record store and label Concreta Sala (@concretasala).

Priscilla started playing in 1993 in the suburb of Fortaleza (Agito Jovem, Turma do Circuito). She has been a music researcher for 25 years and is a pioneer in the commercialization of vinyl records inside and outside Brazil. Moreover, she is a reference in the research and dissemination of Brazilian Bass to other countries through the sale of records and sets for different radio stations such as Rinse, NTS, The Lot Radio and Dublab, among others. She identifies herself as a woman, of Northeastern culture, mother of Mariah and Cayo, addicted to music digging, tapioca, sea bathing and cafuné (brazilian term for get your head scratched).

“Following the International Women's Day celebrations, I decided to make a "Yin Yang" mix, which represents the balance between women and men. I started with some Rap, where the male voice is predominant, passing by the Charm in a hurry to be able to reach the final destination right away: Freestyle - one of my favorite styles, both to listen and to dance. It is also known worldwide as Electro Dance and in Brazil as Funk Melody. In the Freestyle, the female vocal, mainly dominated by latinas, and the drama in the lyrics, which are almost always about love, are predominant. How not to love this combination? :) I hope you like it, the tracks have been chosen with esteem.”

Comecei com o Raps rasteiros, onde o a voz masculina é predominante, passei pelo Charm com pressa para poder chegar logo no destino final: o Freestyle - um dos meus estilos preferidos, para ouvir e para dançar. Também conhecido como Electro Dance e, no Brasil, Funk Melody. No Freestyle é predominante o vocal feminino, a latinidade das vocalistas, e o drama nas letras que quase sempre são sobre amor. Como não amar essa combinação? :) Espero que gostem, as faixas foram escolhidas
com estima.”
