Based on an old Lithuanian "sutartinė", the song describes the frantic efforts of a young bridesmaid to please her mother-in-law while picking, stretching and spinning flax. “Sutartinės” (from the word “sutarti” - to be in concordance, in agreement) are unique to Lithuanian folk music. Typically, two dissonant and syncopated melodic phrases are sung together, resulting in a driving yet hypnotic quality.
