Spud Foltikki's Funk

Another collaboration with Torbjørn Vagle and Jimmy Rivas.
Torbjørn sent me a demo of his new song and asked if I would be interested in collaborating.
As with our previous collaborations, Torbjørn and myself traded ideas until we had a reasonable draft of the song to send to Jimmy for him to write lyrics and record his vocal.
Thanks very much to Torbjørn for asking me to contribute to this gorgeous song (visit his page to hear how he got the title)and of course to Jimmy for his outstanding vocal and lyrics. Working with these guys is awesome.

Jimmy sent Torbjørn and myself an old version of the song to see if we would be interested in collaborating with him on a re make. After much fun and trading ideas, here is the result.

The Last Frost of Winter

An instrumental tribute to my favourite three piece rock band.
Formed in 1968, they were at the top of their game as musicians and songwriters and had a massive following across the globe. Currently they are ranked fifth in the U.S. for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio album sales by a rock band, only behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith.
I had the pleasure of seeing them play live many times during their lengthy career and it always amazed me how three guys could make such an amazing sound. They finally called it a day with the sad passing of their drummer in 2020. The song title is a reference to the place where they were formed and to the lyrics of one of their early songs, but who were they?

A four part instrumental based on the story from Greek Mythology in which Perseus rides on the winged horse Pegasus to rescue Andromeda from the sea serpent Cetus.

Dream Prisoner Part II - Enchanted Garden (Featuring Chris Kinsey)

The fruition of a three way collaboration with Chris Kinsey and Paul I. Stubley.

Based on one of many glorious melodies from Paul McCartney’s Standing Stone, an extended classical work written by McCartney and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios.  The work was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of E.M.I. records and was premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1997.

This is a progged – up interpretation of part three of the first movement, track 3 on the album.

Chris and Paul gave me their individual contributions and I effectively “threw the paint at the canvas”.   I then spent a considerable amount of time mixing and eventually the picture began to develop.  As the work progressed we discussed what we thought would work and what wouldn’t, eventually arriving at this, the finished piece.
A big, big thanks to Chris and Paul for creating exceptional pieces of music for me to work with.

Back to my roots with this one, hence the title.

The intro/outro melody of the piece was one of the first things I wrote when I started to teach myself guitar more years ago than I care to remember.  I recorded a demo of the track in the 90’s on my Fostex X15 four track cassette recorder but recently decided to record a new version with the aid of digital recording technology; this is the result.

Dream Prisoner Part III - Flying

A version of Jimena’s open collaboration ‘You Are Not Him’ by Chris Kinsey and myself.
When I heard Jimena’s vocal stems they reminded me of Pat Benatar, so I thought I’d attempt a Soft Rock version of her song; this is the result.

It’s interesting to hear how other artists on the Cloud have interpreted the song in so many different ways, covering many genres, they’re all amazing which I believe is testament to a great song.

My second collaboration with Chris Kinsey and Jimena.  The song began with a few chords played on a midi keyboard using ‘silky string selection’ in Logic to work out the structure.  I added Guitars, Bass and Drums and asked Chris to add some ‘Kinseyfication’ on Piano and Organ, then, it was over to Jimena to write the lyrics and record her amazing vocal tracks. Once I had all the constituent parts, I set about the final mix and mastering; this is the result.
A huge, huge thanks to Chris and Jimena for their outstanding contributions which have elevated the song to another level.

A cover version by Jimmy Rivas and myself of the classic Free song written by Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirk, Tetsu Yamauchi, John Bundrick and Paul Kossoff.  Issued as a single in the UK in December 1972 and included on their final studio album Heartbreaker.

Some Quadraphonic Groove Thing (One and Other - ♤ -  Dairv Dubbleyew)

A keyboard and guitar based instrumental. 
The title refers to Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect and creator of Portmeirion, the Italianate village in North Wales. The track is supposed to represent various periods of the villages development from its conception in the 1920s, to the fire which destroyed the hotel in 1981 and its subsequent rebuilding, up to the present day.

I sent a demo of the song with the basic chord sequence to Torbjørn  and Jimmy in the hope they would consider joining me for another collaboration, Torbjørn to add his exceptional keyboards, Jimmy to write lyrics and provide his powerful and distinctive vocal, luckily for me they both agreed.

Torbjørn  and Jimmy’s contributions have lifted the song to a level way beyond my original demo, thanks very much for your outstanding work guys.

Triumph over adversity is the theme here, I think we can all relate.
