With a few different residencies, he delights in soundtracking a broad range of LGBTQ scenarios, from daytime events (Dim sum & drag, Mom Jeans), cruisey evenings at Steamworks Baths, to late nights at Berlin Nightclub or the occasional DIY function

A word about the mix:

With the long Chicago winter drawing to a close, I wanted to make a mix with a more distinct sense of transition as opposed to riding a particular vibe. It starts with a psychedelic spoken word track, builds with some tropical imagery and 2000s-era trippy tech, and ends somewhere else… hopefully joyous?

"The mix was recorded in one take on the hottest day on record in London, pretty much naked, which isn’t an attempt to be saucy, it was just too hot for clothes in my flat. So the energy behind it.. ‘heatwaviness’ perhaps? 

In terms of listening, if you wanted to replicate those circumstances you could wait for a really hot day, ditch clothes and then put it on. Maybe treat yourself to an ice lolly. Failing that, however you want to listen is fine: on the bus, in the bath, pre-drinks with the gals etc."

The Miami-based DJ has recently lain shed a new party series with Jonny From Space and True Vince called Objects Don’t Dance which stemmed from a monthly radio show on Klangbox Radio. They kicked off the series with an all-night-long b2b True Vine and have also booked the likes of Sepher, Mozhgan, Peach and Aurora Halal. Sister System is also affiliated with Floyd, Space, III Points and Omnidisc.

Juanita's Mix 28 with Ron Like Hell @ronlikehell

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I have been a music enthusiast since age 9 (playing violin then tenor sax), bought records with my weekly allowance every Friday night when I was a kid. Loved seeing DJs in the 80s but a visit to NYC in 1990 changed my life after hearing the city's DJs "say" different things with their records which were all non-top 40 tunes. A big door opened and I went through never looking back being eclectic as possible.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I moved to NYC in March of 1998. After 8 months, I became an employee of Satellite Records selling records to every dance music head that rolled through the city. It was both fun and very hard work. After 2001, retail struggled hard so I worked part time jobs at other record shops while I sold records online and did my best to play music I owned that people wanted to hear in the non-loving house music days pre-2009. Stuff like obscure synth, rare disco, italo, ebm and psych rock were my go-tos to play but I still collected house records even if they were just for me to enjoy. In 2009 I partnered with a buddy as a DJ duo then later we named ourselves Wrecked in 2011, a major left turn of a party for the NYC gay/queer nightlife scene which I never had an opportunity to play for. Being accepted by that community truly helped me feel like I finally gave something back to the city that taught and continues to teach me so much.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. The mixes on Juanita's are a great example of Brooklyn's finest and friendliest DJs. Since the series was launched, many of the mixes are helping me through these heavy modern times so I wanted to give back what those mixes gave me which is comfort and joy.  My approach was to include bumping, patient, soulful, dubby and trippy music. Something to help you relax yet dance nice and easy to...or get your head nodding, raising the volume as you chill with your friends on the couch. I had a wonderful time making it so a tremendous thank you for asking me to contribute.
