Kiddo Guest Mixes

CCL (@ccl-url) has many tricks and plenty of surprises up their sleeve. London-born, US-bred but now Berlin-based, they are playful in what they play but serious about how they play it, whether that's head spinning 160bpm cut, "cowgirl-breaks or wiggle steppers." The key for this multidisciplinary artist and former New Forms festival curator is to find the similarities and differences between shades of sound and rhythm and exploit them to spellbinding effect. As a producer, they are no different and have always managed to find fresh in-between sounds on labels like Fever AM and Discwoman. 

The singular DJ steps up this week with almost two hours of pure sonic adventure. It's a perfect showcase of how they can soundtrack imaginary worlds from humid future jungles to robot dances in the sky. You'll hear rhythms you could never imagine and contort your body in impossible ways, all while admiring the dexterity of the DJ who has threaded together such a trippy trip.

Inspired by forces of universal chaos & the innovative, experiential visions found within midwestern electronic music, she's since embarked on a lifelong journey of channeling binary dissolving phenomena throughout our known universe via her unbridled musical vitality & the multifaceted Sweet Abyss imprint.

Notes on the Mix ///

"This mix is a live recorded portion of a set I played late at night at the wonderful club Outra Cena in Lisbon, Portugal in April 2024. The vibe of it is pondering the orb, watching your life and emotions play out in arcane swirls in front of your eyes as you embody the role of an unreliable narrator in your own existence. Sometimes this view allows clarity, other times overwhelmed by imagined insecurities, other times allowing a reprieve from strife into self love. Emotions and mental findings that feel held in many sets of mine. Sonically, I really felt encouraged this night to dive into my love of the stranger ends of house music, and combinations of industrial/dub/breaks on top. Specifically the influence of my lifelong love of industrial and synth music can really be felt throughout, as well as lamentations on loneliness and connection within capitalism that lots of that music speaks to - industrial music for industrial people. Discotekno, Haunted house, whatever name you want to apply to this music - as well as a healthy dose of dubwise rave stylistics. A strange dream within a stranger reality, living in the paradox. Musick for dance, musick for new corridors of your mind, musick against the fascist, ogliarchal pacification of who we are - viva la differenze!"

The album is filled with surprises, seamlessly transitioning from acid infected vibes and catchy electronic pop to avant-garde electro cuts. But this is "The Mixtape", a 45 min energetic and deep dive into essential Electro and Detroit Techno. Influences: Stylistically, I've always been very influenced by the musical vocabularies of Detroit and Chicago techno and house. I also get pretty excited about Maurizio/Basic Channel/MVO stuff, Sheffield/Birmingham hard techno, spacey electro/breaks from The Hague, and pretty much anything with acidic sounds. DJs who have inspired me for a long time include Daniel Bell, Josh Werner, DJ Heather, Move D, Maayan Nidam, DVS1, Lena Wilikins, and pretty much every iteration/lineup/moniker of all the Underground Resistance artists. 

Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: Walking and Falling - a DJ workshop and mentorship program for woman-identifying and nonbinary music enthusiasts

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: It's easy to fall into the inevitable "impostor syndrome"/self-criticism trap. Remember that you're doing something healthy for your mind and body by sharing the music you enjoy. Play what makes your brain and body dance how you like hearing it played - the rest will fall into place. Also remember you are not alone. Seek out and lean on supportive, like-minded folks to navigate the more trying aspects of the music industry.

Daisychain 005 - Kiddo

Elly Schook aka Kiddo, Walking and Falling co-founder and mentor, offers up her first mix for the series:  her opening set for the legendary Mike Huckaby, recorded live at Smartbar earlier this year.  Though this mix is a hypnotic blend of precisely-mixed house, Kiddo is known for her ability to work in a range of genres, from driving techno to acid to Chicago house.  Enjoy!

Daisychain is a movement to showcase power, beauty, and strength of DJs and artists. Like the sequencing of electrical equipment, Daisychain will connect and develop a symbiotic network of trans, nonbinary people and femmes - from all backgrounds. DJs and artists from these realms of identity will continue to find their strength in sound by showcasing their art for a weekly guest mix series.

Based in Chicago, IL

Influenced by the sounds of Berlin, Detroit, and Chicago, Kiddo's style is a melding of numerous genres of current and classic techno and house music. Her sets may range anywhere from deep house to more dark and sinister techno. Lately she's been moving the dance floors with seamless techno mixes and the occasional jackin' house cut thrown in for good measure. She is known for her enthusiasm behind the turntables, connecting with the dance floor through the combination of a charismatic smile and energetic mixing.

In 2006, Kiddo held a monthly residency at Chicago's Smart Bar, where she produced showcases to introduce internationally respected techno artists to the city's dance music devotees. In addition to her regular appearances around Chicago, she has performed in Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, Buffalo, Miami, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Northern California. In 2008, Kiddo contributed vocals to Decimal's Technicolor Lover EP on Soma Quality Recordings and hopes to revisit music production in the near future. In 2009, she traveled to Spain to perform at the world famous club Mogambo in Valencia and more recently has enjoyed DJing in Playa Del Carmen, and Cozumel. 

As a vocalist trained in classical and jazz performance, Kiddo has sung with several Chicago choral groups when she's not behind the turntables or dancing her heart out at late-night gatherings in support of her city's vibrant electronic music scene. In her spare time, Kiddo has also acted as a contributing writer for Newcity magazine,  Resident Advisor, and Little White Earbuds. In 2017, Kiddo co-founded the Walking and Falling mentoring and workshop program for woman-identifying and nonbinary music enthusiasts.
