Tried to explore working through all the associated emotions with tough percussive sounds and haunting melodies before finding the little bit of uplift at the end that music always provides in the midst of madness."

As Moods 56, Max Watts @limitednetwork takes us back two generations in his family's history. Consider this a prologue in the Max Watts book of Funk. For Max, funk runs in the family and there is no shame in embracing that which he knows from his father Eli and his Grandfather Marzette.

1) Where did you grow up? Was it a single place or many places? How did this influence the songs you listened to?

I grew up in Nashville, TN where my Grandfather died. My Dad was living with him at the time, and decided that it would be a good place to raise a kid. That same neighborhood is where I spent my childhood. 

2) Can you pick one song in the mix and explain where you first listened to it

The first two tracks played in the mix are from my Grandfather Marzette in his self-titled Free Jazz record, Marzette And Company. I remember having to write a paper on it in high school and fully listening to it. But my pops definitely played it around us when we were younger.

3) Who “introduced” you to these songs? Was it a person, a radio station, a CD, or something else?

My dad introduced me to early hip hop and other electronic sounds really young with films like Beat Street and records from Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Funkadelic, etc. He also introduced me to jazz artists like Don Cherry, The Pat Metheny Group, and some of Miles Davis’ fusion recordings. While I was younger, He was in a funk band growing up called Small Axe. This band was formed from the equipment Marzette had left when he passed away in the late 90s. The band eventually parted ways and my pops was working on his own productions, but I remember hearing those sounds from our smoky garage. Those were the first electronic sounds I heard. That was in 2008 when he started using Logic Pro. He later gave me his and his dad’s record collection along with all the production notes from Marzette’s studio days. My pops definitely made sure in passing down a diverse range of music in our family growing up.

4) Where and when did you first hear techno? What drew you to it? Who did it sound like it was for?

When I first heard techno around 2018, it must have been a mix from The Wizard - his Essential Mix on BBC Radio from 1998. I had no idea this music came from Detroit, but it made sense and aligned with my musical background growing up. It was different from anything I had heard. I visited Detroit while I was in school at MTSU in 2020. Went to 3000 and Mike told me to come move out here. And here we are now. 

5) You’ve got the microphone. What do you want to say to the techno community?

To the techno community, keep your head down, stay underground, and focus on the music. Peace.

We’ve paired Max Watt’s mix with an installation from Paul Druecke, a Milwaukee-based visual artist whose work considers text, time, and gatherings as sites of growth and accountability. The 2017 piece, Shoreline Repast, reframes a “typical” historic landmark post for the Great Lakes as a malleable, melting poem that passes down both its English and Anishinaabe heritage. Techno Ruined My Life: The Hostile Ambient Takeover Mix (Excerpt)

Location: Seattle, WA

Influences: The people who influence and inspire me the most are honestly the other DJs and producers in my community. FACT Mag once called Seattle a "not-so-obvious rave city" when they spotlighted one of my friend Liv's excellent mixes. I bristle a bit at the characterization of Seattle as this electronic music underdog, because we have so many talented people here. Aside from Liv (Livwutang), some of the other friends who really inspire me to push myself as an artist are Paris Siris, 'nohup' (aka sighup), DJ Gag Reflex (who runs my favorite monthly party, Bloom), Sharlese (who brings out all my love for dark techno, EBM, industrial, and more), Aos, ZXC, Flora FM, CCL (who recently relocated and is touring the world like the baddass that they are), Succubass, Jenn Green, R-Pal, IVVY, DJ Having Sex, DJ Bricks, and honestly too many more to name. Obviously, everyone in TUF (whether or not they make music or DJ), influence me on a creative level to be confident that my voice as an artist matters. Secondnature, Apartment E, Tech Startup, and Open System are collectives comprised of insanely talented DJs and musicians who are throwing some of the best parties in the city. A newer generation of queer folks are also doing really cool things in Seattle (like Queer Dance Affair), and I'm always inspired by those folks. Local labels and distributors like Further Records and Medical Records are literal city treasures, and the people running them are some of the sweetest and most supportive humans. I think on and off about leaving Seattle (as many people do with their hometown), but I also really believe in building community and being proud to represent where you came from, even if it's a "not-so-obvious" hotbed of talent. Subconsciously, maybe it makes us work harder to be seen, but I don't think many of the folks I've named here have any trouble being recognized for the incredible talents that they are due to location. I also think what makes Seattle special (at least within my immediate music community) is the emphasis on resource sharing and mutual support that many people strive for. There is less gatekeeping here than what I hear about in other cities. It's not perfect by any means, but I think people here really do make an effort and that makes it special a special place to live.

Advice for the DJs, artists and producers of our community: Don't be afraid to ask people for help, and be generous with the knowledge and resources you possess yourself. Don't hold yourself to impossibly high standards, especially as someone from a marginalized identity. Don't let one bad gig convince you that you're not meant to do what you're aspiring to accomplish. Find ways to stay grounded, because the music industry can be a draining place (especially for femme/nonbinary/gender non-conforming individuals and POC). Surround yourself with like-minded, supportive folks. Try your best to avoid burnout. Be supportive of the people around you and try to avoid the "why not me?" mentality when your friends experience success. There is no formula for "making it"; do what you do because it brings you joy and gives people a reason to dance.

Daisychain 097 - T.Wan

Now based in the Bay Area, @sisgirlpgh has become a staple of the US queer underground via the close-knit and musically multifaceted Pittsburgh dance music community and through unforgettable sets at festivals like Gays Hate Techno and Honcho Campout. A co-founder of Pittsburgh's MESH, alongside ChadKid and newly minted resident Calin, and a resident of Kosmetik in San Francisco, their sets traverse many tempos within a dreamy, bassy, and effervescent palette. Their mix is a perfect backdrop as we lament the absence of those queer summer moments in the woods due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bouncing between melancholic reflection and joyful reminiscence.

"The tracks I put into this mix have been some I have been sitting on for a while and wanted to put together. When quarantine because of COVID started I wanted to create something with energy but still something on a tempo that wouldn’t necessarily be played on a dance floor.

The mix is recorded all around 100 BPM but still brings energy so it’s great for a mellow time or something different. The tracks are new plus some that I’ve had tucked away for a time like this. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve put together and I hope it brings people a lot of comfort and happiness during this time."
