A few years ago my Grandmother was interviewed about what life was like in Clare when she was younger. When I heard the recording I couldn't believe how personal and heartfelt it was, I hadn't heard anyone her age talk so honestly about love. I put parts of the interview to some chords I was writing and everything clicked into place. It's a great introduction to the upcoming record, which is inspired by living in the west of Ireland. My Grandmother is 90 years old, and still lives in a thatched cottage in Ballyvaughan.

I came across Sinead White last year, and really loved how her voice had a unique 'Irish' quality to it, but at the same time felt very contemporary. It was a perfect match for Love's on Top, which was a track inspired by Galway City at night, especially the west end and around the Spanish Arch. This track could be considered the Lead single to the Tribes E.P, and it's a good snapshot of what the rest of the E.P. is like.

Love's On Top (feat. Sinead White)

I heard Elm's track Amends a while ago, and was blown away by the amount of feeling in the vocal. When I started remixing the track, I wanted to keep that frail feeling in there, while adding a whole pile of strength in the bass tones. I was really struck by some of the phrases in the track, and I wanted to repeat some of them throughout the track, something I think is really effective in dance music; it tends to make certain phrases really profound when you have a simple beat and melody underneath them.

Falling for you was one of the first tracks I wrote using my own natural samples. The sea sound is from Inch beach in Cork, The bell sounds are cut up samples from a wind chime I found in an Air Bnb in Achill. Sinead recorded these vocals on Valentia with me, and I think it’s my favourite vocal I’ve ever worked on. It’s so undeniably Irish, but feels modern at the same time, which is kind of my buzz.

A while back I became interested in the idea of how people deal with loss, and the different ways they recover from it. I had just been through a break up of a five year relationship, and was at my lowest point, feeling like nothing would ever be ok again. I found myself writing all sorts of melodies and chords as a form of therapy, but could never really bring myself to make songs out of them. A few months later I had started to recover from the grief, and I travelled to rural France for a month, signing out of all my social media accounts and cutting off contact with the outside world, to focus on creating music. What resulted was a body of work on the theme of Loss and recovery loss, and my most personal project to date. It's really scared me, but I'm also more proud of it than anything I've ever done.

Daithi - Nobody New Around You

Perfect Harmony is a track built around the fear of losing someone, and eventual acceptance that someday it will happen. Orla Gartland, the vocalist on the track, based her lyrics on the fear of losing her grandfather. 
The lyrics are some of my favourite I’ve ever had on my tracks, especially the line ‘Thicker than water, you’ll leave all your sons and your daughters, but you’ll live in the stories you tell, and I’ll pass it down to everyone else.’
Perfect Harmony was mainly recorded in rural France along with the rest of the album (L.O.S.S.), And you can actually hear the bird song from outside my window at the start of the track. Hope you enjoy it!

‘An Irish Goodbye’ is a track written and recored in self isolation, in front of a live stream audience on Youtube. The track features contributions from the violinist Clare Sands & Sinead White, who sent their parts over email while watching the stream.

Daithi is an electronic music producer obsessed by the culture of Ireland. The three time choice award nominee combines nature recordings, old Irish samples and analog synths to create a unique type of house music that’s soaked in Irish culture. A mainstay in the Irish gigging scene, his live show is an improvised performance, creating on the spot dance music using synths, drum machines and live fiddle. A few years ago, Daithi found a forgotten recording of his grandmother, where she talked about how she met her husband, and what it was like living in the west of Ireland for the past 90 years. Daithi sampled this recording to create ‘Mary Keanes Introduction’, a track which captured the imagination of millions of Irish people across the world, and became one of the most successful Irish singles that year, staying no.1 in the spotify viral charts for 6 weeks. It proved Daithi’s mantra on music: Every sample should have a back story, and every song should be personal.
