Mesa Babe wrote Heavy Weight in the aftermath of their first real fracture, the moment when the band stopped being a sisterhood and started becoming something darker, more binding. The song isn’t about physical burden; it’s about the curse of carrying the past. The blood, the guilt, the deals, and the deaths that keep their names whispered through the decades.

The story goes that after Abigail’s temper nearly tore the band apart one night, she vanished into the woods for three days. When she returned, she brought with her a relic, a rusted set of iron shackles she claimed had “appeared where the trees spoke her name.” Each shackle was etched with a word none of them could read. She didn’t say what she’d done to get them.

That same night, they wrote Heavy Weight. The riffs are jagged, metallic, like something dragging across a stone floor. Addison’s bassline throbs like a heartbeat under strain, while Alice’s vocals sound restrained, almost gasping, the sonic embodiment of being chained to something you can’t let go of.
