Many thanks to a friend for the tip that AdBlock pro on chrome will block the new experience killing ads (SoundCloud do seem persistent in trying to drive away "paying" users that provide their actual "original" unique content).
I think it's just a matter of time before they degrade the platform fully, so I've started using Distrokid to get on alternate platforms such as Spotify.
I'd advise everyone else to check into both these things...
