Anything Over

Night Listening means sitting, through the night, in a chosen location, as still and quiet as possible, often for many hours, absorbed in purely listening, while recording. This is an excerpt from a recent Night Listening. It involves three Brushtail Possums, and one Red Fox. The responses of the Possums to the barking of the Fox are very interesting. (Don't start with the volume raised to more than 50 to 60 per cent: some of the fox barks are quite close and loud.)

Across the Galaxy

All Rhodes Lead to Rome

Inspired by John Oswald’s album Aparanthesi. 
Oswald uses slowly transitioning timbres to create a piece which, although it only uses one pitch, is texturally captivating. I have used a combination of orchestral instruments, electronic instruments and environmental and vocal recordings to portray a sense of the ocean.

23 Degrees came from the idea of not taking music so seriously - I didn’t set out to compose a piece of music, I just accidentally knocked over a water bottle and it made an interesting sound, so I recorded it. I had recently been listening to Yosi Horikawa, specifically his album Wandering, which has inspired a lot of my recent work, layering similar sounds together and looking at music from the perspective of audio over music theory. 
This piece explores the timbres we might usually ignore, discovering textures by getting up close and personal with a microphone. 23 Degrees uses the natural rhythm of spinning objects to form the structure of the composition, creating an irregular sense of movement throughout the piece.
