Detroit Techno

Our next Mix Series guest is a man who requires very little introduction. One of Detroit’s most iconic figures, Kenny Larkin has been at the very forefront of the electronic music scene for more than three decades. 

Best known for his soulful approach to techno, Larkin’s timeless productions have been released via such mammoth labels as Warp Records, Peacefrog, Planet E, Rush Hour, KMS and Transmat, not forgetting his own label Art Of Dance, of course. 

Following a recent string of classic Larkin reissues and represses, such as the Azimuth and Metaphor LPs, we reached out to Kenny to see if he would be interested in putting together a mix for our series. The result is a particularly unique one - it's a 1 hour and 15-minute recording taken from a live DJ set he did in LA on Saturday 4th September 2021.

It is fair to say that for every Derrick May and Jeff Mills, the Motor City has produced a whole bunch of talented artists that never quite got the same acclaim. Kelli Hand aka K-HAND is surely one of those. The rather under the radar artist is one of Detroit’s most consistent performers, and has been for the last twenty years. Her music revolves around slick and robust drums and has come on essential labels like Underground Resistance, Warp and Tresor as well as more recently Nina Kraviz’s Trip. 

Deep seated as her roots are, K-HAND'S music is not all throwback stuff: this mix she has put together for us mixes up the old and the new, the choppy and the smooth. Underpinned by a darkly seductive energy, it bristles and brims with vocal laced breakbeats and swinging garage, glides through some smooth deep techno and gets loose with some wild style jams that will get you out of your seat.

In later years, Damien Ford would move to the music capital of the world, NYC, where he began his career with a new look, sound and attitude. Thanks to his success in Miami, the young, popular Disc Jockey quickly found himself playing in world renown nightclubs like Pacha, Webster Hall, Sullivan Room and Love. He quickly became known for his ability to command a room's attention, and to leaveclub-goers in awe; which consequently allowed him to develop a huge, devoted fan base eager to follow Damien wherever he goes. His passion and dedication to the career has led Damien to utilize his years of musical background in the studio, while also taking on the task of label owner, having been passed the torch by former Land of Voodoo Recordings owner and originator, DJ/Producer, Kobbe.
