Pavel Milyakov & Yana Pavlova — blues denial

The rain came down harder than ever before today, it left thick streaks down the windows that obscured the outside world. It seemed to mirror her mood; no matter how much she tried, she couldn't read him at all - his mouth said one thing but his eyes said something completely different. Unbeknownst to him she'd already been putting their relationship to the test, and as it stood he wasn't set to pass with flying colours. 

Cork-based singer and musician Elaine Howley has made a name for herself in Ireland's underground music scene as part of several groups, Crevice, Howlbux and The Altered Hours. As a solo artist her work is intimate and personal, weaving together dusty, textural motifs and lo-fi ditties that suck you into her sonic world. Her newest LP, The Distance Between Heart and Mouth, takes a diaristic form. Recorded on a four-track cassette machine during 2019 and 2020, the nine tracks are guided by Elaine's distant, wistful vocals which sit on a bed of sounds that touch on dub, alt-pop, soul, chanson and psychedelic folk, reminiscent of artists like Broadcast, Leslie Winer and Tirzah.

The initial seed for this project was planted in 2020 when Nicolás Jaar wrote the song “Piedras” for a concert at the Museum of Memory & Human Rights in Santiago, Chile, which commemorates the victims of human rights violations during the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990. Between 2022-2023 it took on a new form as a radio play entitled 'Archivos de Radio Piedras', which was shared on a dedicated Telegram channel. In 2024, the play was converted into a 24 channel installation at the University Museum of Mexico City (MUAC), where it was exhibited for 5 months.

Piedras 1 and 2 is a collection of the tracks featured within the play, all new music by Jaar, but partly presented within the play as the music of Salinas Hasbún (the name a composite homage to Jaar's grandmothers, Graciela Salinas and Miriam Hasbún).

The play follows two friends mourning the disappearance of Salinas Hasbún, a musician and writer who vanished in the early 2020s. Although they live in a future where technology is advanced, they resort to DIY radio methods because the anonymous group “Las 0cho” has launched a worldwide attack on undersea internet cables, causing a global internet blackout.

The play's central theme revolves around the idea that truths, memories and identities speak from the cracks (“rasgaduras”), or the "in-between" spaces ("en el entre"). This concept is supported by the way much of the narration unfolds - in the liminal spaces between radio frequencies. The instability and transitory nature of a constantly shifting radio dial becomes not just a metaphor but the structure of the play itself. It’s in these moments of noise, static and interference that the deeper revelations of the story emerge. This disjointed, ever-changing medium mirrors the way memory and trauma operate within the play - non-linear, slipping through the gaps, found in fragments or ordinary moments, rather than direct transmissions of “official” historical accounts.

This notion reaches its climax at the end of the narrative, when a text is discovered in which Salinas speaks of finding a new number in a small pond in a cave mentioned in the first episodes of the radio play. This pond, inside the “cochlea of the world”, is seen as a way to introduce real-life randomness to computation. Embodied in the salt lakes of northern Chile, home to the world’s oldest bacteria, this randomness disrupts the rigid order of binary code, paving the way for a transformation of digital life.

Algebra Suicide was a Chicago married duo of lyricist/vocalist Lydia Tomkiw and guitarist/keyboardist Don Hedeker formed in 1982. Their first four song EP "True Romance At The World's Fair" was self-released in 1982 and featured a 60's Vox Guitar Organ, a precursor to the synthesizer guitar, and a Multivox Rhythm Ace drum machine. In 1984 they released a second 4 song EP, "An Explanation For That Flock Of Crows" ditching the guitar organ but adding the Casiotone MT-40. The "Big Skin" cassette was released in 1986 and featured 13 new compositions  with more complex arrangements. A compilation album "The Secret Like Crazy" was released in 1988 collecting 20 tracks from the first two EPs and the Big Skin cassette plus unreleased songs.

"Feminine Squared" is a 18 track compilation that collects all 8 songs from the first two EPs,  4 songs from the "Big Skin" cassette, 4 songs from "The Secret Like Crazy", a song from the "Pas De Deux" compilation as well as an unreleased song. Tomkiw and Hedeker calls their approach "Avant Garage" citing inspiration from Patti Smith, Frank O'Hara, Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. Don plays guitar in a hauntingly stark style like Glen Branca, Tom Verlaine or Vini Reilly. He then adds some Casio keyboards and minimal electronic percussion creating a moody, atmospheric backdrop for Lydia's poems. All "songs" are written without hearing the music, dictated  with a distinct midwestern accent and deadpan delivery. Lydia's words span a broad range of twisted, real-life observations; witty with an underlying sense of humor. 

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy black and white jacket featuring the cut up faces of Don and Lydia from  "An Explanation For That Flock Of Crows"  EP. Each LP includes a newsprint sine with lyrics, photos, liner notes and clippings. Also included is a full length DVD featuring a 12-song Algebra Suicide concert from 1984, recorded at the Noise Factory, in Chicago. Though Lydia passed away in 2007, her genius lives on in these recordings. Please respect her decadence.
